Choose carefully

Let's face it, we've all been burned by a rip-off candle before. The pillar candle that burned so unevenly you'd think it was perched like the leaning tower of Pisa. The scarlet red taper candle that dripped all over your mum's best whiter-than-white doily. You don't have to be the victim of candle crime if you do your research. So, with that in mind, these are the things to look for.

Beeswax candles

You can get candles and tealights made out of soy, paraffin and beeswax. Beeswax was obviously the originator, and these honeys are great if you want a drip-free taper candle. Beeswax candles burn, on average, twice as slowly as paraffin wax. The only disadvantage (depending on your perspective) is they can smell a bit like honey.

Soy candles

Along with beeswax, soy wax burns more evenly than paraffin. Since becoming the eco-friendly alternative to paraffin (no toxic chemicals like toluene or benzene), soy candles have become much more affordable and you can get a range of colours and scents or unscented. If you want 100% soy your choice will be limited to jarred candles, because 100% soy wax is far softer than paraffin. With a soy blend you can still get a cleaner burn than pure paraffin.

If you don't want drips, avoid dark colours

High pigment contents can keep the wick from absorbing the wax, which feeds the flame. This also increases the likelihood of drips.

Get on your wick

Top-of-the-range candles use a braided cotton wick, instead of a wire woven into the wick. A cotton wick burns evenly (and slowly), you don't need to trim it all the time and it won't smoke as much as a wiry wick. So now you know your candles, you can buy in bulk with confidence.
