Made in the USA in 1993 before a subsequent owner moved most Lionel production to China, this hopper is an excellent example of Lionel's move into full 1:48 O Scale models. The car is hefty, sturdy, and impressive. Because details such as corner ladders and stirrup steps are molded as part of the body, the car is not too fragile for handling by young railroaders, while the presence of such details makes the model attractive to most adult scale modelers as well. The colors are attention getting with the black, nicely simulated coal mounded above the yellow car body, and a neat red stripe separating the yellow from the green on the lower sides and bottom. The bottom hopper doors are hinged and can be opened, and the simulated coal load can be removed if one prefers to run the hopper as an empty car. The wheel trucks are diecast and equipped with working springs. The sole criticism that I could levy against this car is that, for a coal hauler, it is entirely too clean. Guess it's right off the assembly line and is making its first revenue run!Read full review

Very nice Peabody coal car. Display it with a Peabody locomotive on top of my TV cabinet when not running it.
