The shorts on this omnibus collection are of varying quality, and some of them ("Johnny Appleseed" in particular) are to be watched advisedly, because they may contain songs that, once heard, are as difficult to get out of your head as they are vapid and egregious. I've only seen "Johnny Appleseed" once, nearly twenty years ago now, and I still have only to remember having endured it that one time before the triling stylings of Dennis Day applied to one of the most idiotic songs in the Disney canon will then rattle around in my head for days. But the animation is mostly great, "Blue Shadows" is a real gem, and the piece it leads into, "Pecos Bill" is a superb animation and, on this European DVD, uncensored, so that the cigarette that is part of the design for Bill's face (he can roll his own, no hands, with his tongue) has not been digitally removed by the authoritarian schoolmarms at the Burbank offices. You'll need an all-region player—a sound, eminently affordable investment in any case.Read full review
