Apart from the fact that it's a great British drama of the 50's, my uncle and my sister-in-law's dad - who were both serving in the Royal Navy at the time - are featured in the film as film extras! So that film has a "family connection". At the time, submarines didn't have the tough safety features like with current vessels; so anyone volunteering for the Silent Service was paid a higher wage - called "danger money" for obvious reasons. This film shows the stark reality of high-risk incidences even when not in combat.
