I first saw this movie at the picture theatre as a young 12 year old girl. It had a profound influence on my life - Queen Elizabeth I - independent woman. The character of Mary was played very well too. There was much in the story - plenty of substance. Also Guy Fawke's night was played out in the movie. The following year, when studying history I recall there being a particular question in an exam to do with Guy Fawkes night and I knew the answer to the question. The quality of the movie was exceptional. The characters in the movie were played out with much class - there being Vanessa Redgrave as Mary and Glenda Jackson as Queen Elizabeth I. These actresses were exceptional in their study of these historical figures and the acting superb. I have seen remakes of this movie and in my view they come nowhere near the mark for historical content depicted in this 1971 movie, fabulous acting, Sir Walter Raleigh's role at the time. It is with heartfelt admiration that I can recommend this movie - simply because I loved it as a 12 year old and still do. I actually purchased this for a gift for a friend and she loved it. She was going to watch it again. I already had my copy.Read full review
