Despite a great cast this 1941 comedy-drama from Frank Capra is a y-a-w-n. A woman journalist, just made redundant, fakes a letter claiming to be from a man who is so disgusted by life that he will kill himself at Christmas by jumping off an office block. Challenged to produce the letter-writer, John Doe, the journalist discovers a co-operative guy among the unemployed and in no time at all he is a national celebrity. Some good laughs at the beginning but the film soon turns into a preachy, turgid bore. The cast includes Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck and the wonderful character actor Walter Brennan.
