So far I'm in love with this dehydrator, I only just received it & started using it, so will see how well it holds up. I love that you can expand this unit when you need to, it's noise level is not bad, actually a blender or microwave are way louder than this unit. It does have a rather large footprint on your counter, but they all do & so does a microwave.

This product uses a different heating method than the FD-1010. The FD-1040 is a top-down heated dehydrator where the FD-1010 heats from the bottom. The result is a less (or poorer) heat transfer to the trays which means that it takes considerably more time to dry tray foods. Both are rated at 1000 watts.

We've wanted a good dehydrator to make jerky and this is the one . Wattage is perfect. We made first batch of beef jerky and it turned out perfect. Jerky was flavorful and easy to eat. We found recipe that we liked and used that. Timer makes it easy. Unit is big but easy to clean. Not too noisy when being used. Highly recommend this dehydrator. Dehydrator is large and had to find a place to store it. But that is of no concern to us.

You can buy a more expensive dehydrator but you might not get better. This 1000 watt unit is capable of doing 20 racks at one time. That's a lot of jerky! This company makes one a bit more powerful that will do up to 30 racks at one time. (The FD1010 and the FD1018.) The racks are easy to clean and I bought extras here on ebay.
