Bought this so I don't have to lug several lenses when it is inconvenient to do so. A handy and economical zoom being 18-200mm (though now surpassed by the 18-270mm), it is very light and small (when closed with hood reversed, not much larger than the kit 18-55mm). 62mm filter size is relatively common but it does mean that the maximum aperture stops down to f6.3 rather quickly. It is pretty sharp from f8 onwards though a little soft wide open especially from around 150mm to 200mm. Bokeh is reasonable (better than kit lenses) though not world beating, if you pixel peep you will see the bokeh 'balls' are actually rings, similar to what you get with a mirror lens. Colour rendition appears good. Focus is quite fast and accurate in reasonable lighting, hunts in low light but I think that is more the camera (the Kx is notorious for inaccurate AF, mine is no different). Manual focus is a little 'ratchety' due to the mechanical AF but usable. Macro is good though not brilliantly sharp. Build quality is a bit on the cheap side ('plasticy') but definitely better than the kit lens. Has a zoom lock but I haven't encountered zoom creep. Being a maximum focal length of 200mm means it is generally permitted into most sporting events which is part of the reason I bought it. Overall this lens (being a compromise) covers all bases pretty well, if you want a travel lens or to take to events etc where you have limited space this could be the one for you. Remember to stop down to f8 or more (if possible), bump up your ISO a bit and/or use flash in low light (works well with a small hotshoe flash, ok with popup flash below about 70mm). Great value for money.Read full review
