The D800E is the D800 with the anti-aliasing filter removed for maximum resolving power. I did have minor concerns about increased moire problems due to this feature but even this was not a problem. On the negative side the only other thing I can think of is that you will probably need to think about upgrading your computer system if you have an older PC or Mac simply because the unavoidably large file sizes (36Mb in RAW) make heavy demands on image editing software and you will end up with a long wait otherwise. Be prepared to invest in some additional hard drive storage also! Operation is a breeze, ergonomics are excellent and NIkon has clearly but a lot of thought into this camera both in terms of features (includes on-camera HDR, amazing video) and logical function control on-camera including some useful settings for background 'master' changes like EV adjustment. The usual robust magnesium alloy build quality. BIgger than the D7000 for instance, not quite as massive as the 'professional series' cameras but a good 'handful' - which personally I like. However, for the money you should expect all these features and it should deliver 'out of the box', which it does, but you will have to refine your shooting style - due to the small pixel size and very high resolution it is very unforgiving of camera shake and will show motion blur with subjects at quite slow speeds. This is not a fault of the camera it is simply that with the tiny pixels a very small degree of motion is detected and recorded. I have had to up my birds in flight shutter speed to c.1/2000s as a minimum to ensure crisp shots. This means you need good glass unless you are blessed with good ambient lighting. Initially I was concerned about value for money and whether this camera would be versatile enough for me (I concentrate on macro and nature photography) but I have found it to be an extremely capable all-rounder which has exceeded my (high) expectations. You do need to consider if you really need the pixel resolution before buying this, however. Bearing in mind that you can print an 11 x 14" gallery print at 300dpi at full resolution with a 12MP camera you are basically gaining the ability to crop heavily with this camera and still retain printable detail. If you are not a 'cropper' then the D600 would be a much better camera for you in this range, and considerably cheaper. The frame rate on the D800E is pretty good considering the huge amount of data it is pushing into the buffer and I have had not cause to complain really - occasionally I will miss a shot because of the low fps in Continuous High but this is completely to be expected. This is not a D2h or D3 running at 9 fps, but the D2h is 4MP built in 2005, the D3 is 12.1MP and this delivers 40MP with each shot at only half the speed... In conclusion - if you need resolution for cropping or macro then this is the best camera on the market at present. It simply annihilates all the opposition - how they manage to maintain dynamic range and low noise with such small pixels is beyond me. If you doin't need the resolution then I would suggest the much cheaper D600. Moire is easily handled even without the anti-aliasing filter but may require a change of angle, position or lighting occasionally. Autofocus is crisp, quick and sharp up to f/4 as to be expected. Advantages over the slightly cheaper D800? A noticeable increase in sharpness when you really need it. Otherwise the D800 is exactly the same.Read full review
This camera does not disappoint, whether you're an amateurs looking to upgrade, a hobbyist, or even a professional looking for a decent backup. This is phenomenal in low light situations as well as bright light situations, no lens flares and works brilliantly with add on equipment such as grips. Would definitely recommend this to others.

Great camera for vintage F-mount lenses. 36MP still competes today.
