At f2.8, it is sharp and able to take pictures in comparatively low light than a f5.6 would take. Though heavy and without an internal motor, it works great with cameras that have it's own motor such as the d300s.

Folks who do a lot of photography like to stack the odds in their favor. The AI-S Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 ED-IF lens does that very well. The f2.8 expands the photographer's possibilities a lot. The depth of field at 20 ft. is 3", which does wonders for the background. The ED glass gives very sharp results. It is comforting to know that images as crisp as possible, will be there in a post-shoot examination. Yes, it's heavy, but a monopod helps. That's why I've bolted one to the carrying case...one hand carries all. I worked with lots of press guys using this lens and I've wanted one for years. I've admired their work and now have one...eBay made it possible. Is it worth the cost...speaking for the obsessed...you bet it is!
