This documentary is a one-of-a-kind understanding on the depth and emotional impact that played out during the hostage crises Sept 5 in Munich. It is brilliantly put together with live video and commentary as events unfolded. In addition, the documentary is filled with interviews of not just those directly involved, but also family members of the hostages, and the impact it had on all of them during and after this tragic event. What is most striking to me when watching this documentary, is the absolute naive and inept way the situation was handled by the West German and Bavarian authorities. But even more incredulous, was the unbelievable callous ambivalence, of not just the West German government, but the Olympic Committee toward the crises. The bottom line is: they just wanted to make the whole situation go away and do whatever it took to keep the games and the spirit of the games moving forward with no regard to securing the lives of the remaining hostages. Between the inept handling of the crises and the powers-to-be washing their hands of the situation, 9 remaining hostages of the Israeli delegation still alive where needlessly murdered. Following these events, Israel launched Operation Wrath of God, in which 2 of the 3 remaining Black September members who survived where eventually assassinated along with 12 other individuals thought to be involved in the planning. Operation Spring of Youth, a sub-mission of the greater operation, was a brazen attack at the PLO headquarters in Lebanon where 3 high ranking officials where eliminated, along with the headquarters of the Palestine Liberation Front. Steven Spielberg’s movie “Munich” tries to put doubt in Israel’s response to the killings by equating their actions to those of the terrorist. Besides his factual basis being totally inaccurate to the events and how they unfolded, his elitist utopia on dealing with fanatical terrorist bent on destruction is a misguided effort that the Obama administration is soon learningRead full review
I was not born when the Munich tragedy took place and was not really aware of it until I just happened to watch this documentary when it was shown on tv. This documentary shows actual footage, news reels and interviews with not only family members and surviving team members but even with one of the terrorists. I couldn't believe the incompetence of the authorities and all the mistakes that were made in the attemped rescue. This movie is graphic, it shows actual pictures of the murdered men; but it is also excellently done. This movie draws you in and I was furious watching the events take place. If want to know (or remember) what happened at the Munich Olympic games, I would definitely reccommend this movie.
Anyone who has seen Spielberg's morally ambiguous movie, "Munich" should see this movie. Where Spielberg's action thriller ascribes moral equivalency between Palestinian terrorist murderers and Israeli Mossad agents who deliver justice, this movie sheds a bit more light on the truth of the murderers. It's still an outrage that the Olympic community has not never acknowledged, nor memorialized the brutal killing of 12 Israeli athletes back in September 1972.
