Chinese but still pretty good
I bought the 650SSM spin reel as a cheap guest fishing reel. Took it home and dismantled and relubed the reel. These are not like the old US made models but still look very good considering the $69 price tag.The drag system is not full carbon but has a teflon washer and the carbon washers are not the greatest quality but again this is a full metal reel for a very low price. I replaced the drag washers and got a lot better drag out of it. I relubed with Inox MX8 as I usually do for spin reels and it was a lot smoother. Good simple design, crazy cheap but will do the job. They are a bit heavy but not a deal breaker.I bought the 650SSM spin reel as a cheap guest fishing reel. Took it home and dismantled and relubed the reel. Simple, affordable, robust and reliable spinning reel made for saltwater applications!
I was looking for a simple, affordable, robust and reliable spinning reel for light to medium surf and heavy estuary work, to be teamed with a medium action 9-foot rod that I had lying around. I haven't had a chance to use it yet but the Penn Spinfisher looks the goods. Metal body, sealed bearings, made for specifically for saltwater applications. I have other Penn threadline reels and I'm very happy with them so I'm confident that this reel will deliver. It gets rave reviews and at this price ($69 a pop!) who can argue?! I bought the smallest Spinfisher (the 650SSM) since I want to run 15-pound mono but I reckon I may get the bigger 750SSM for a heavy 9-foot surf rod I have waiting in the wings, that wants to run 20-pound mono through its guides. I've already recommended my friend buy a ...
