I've owned a variety of types of noise canceling headphones. Unfortunately, I keep leaving them on airplanes. As a result, I'm always looking for a brand that gives what I perceive as 80-90% of a Bose set for a tiny fraction of the price. This is my second set of Phillips HN-110, (my wife has the other set) and they're great. 10-15 bucks used on eBay and IMHO 85-90% as good as Bose.
I got these headphones because I had to listen to the details of some music for work. I find that I can hear these details very well on these headphones. At that as just basic headphones they are some of the best that I have ever heard and I highly recommend them as such. The regular price for them is well with in the range for just a good pair of headphones. Of course these are active noise canceling headphones and in that fact I would say they are adequate but do not excel. They did not block or deaden most sounds around me any more when turned on than when turned off. The around the ear design and the padding does a good job of reducing sound on its own, and turning on the active canceling doesn't make much of a difference on most sounds. It did cancel some of the low frequency/volume sounds such as the AC blower and the ceiling fan. I haven't yet tried them with road noise or airplane noise, but I would guess in the lower audio range they should work well. Going back to the quality of the sound, it is so good that I have found it hard to listen to MP3s with it. These headphones make all the little issues of the lost data and flattening of that format stand out to the point of distraction. At that I wouldn’t want to listen to anything poorly recorded with these headphone, because they will make you hear all of those details you could normally ignore with cheaper headphones or speakers. All in all they are a great value and work very well. I would have paid the full retail cost for them and been happy with the purchase, and if you shop for them you can find them at a great price that makes them a true value.Read full review
I read a lot of reviews and compared prices before settling for these headphones.I wanted a good set that especially to use in airplanes but didn't want to break the bank and this ended up being a great choice. I don't give it 5 stars because I know there are others a lot more expensive out there that do a better job but for the price this are in my opinion the best I could have bought. I really feel a difference when having the noise isolation on. It uses a AAA battery which lasted for intermitent use during two long flights to Europe and several shorter ones in between. I also like being able to use the headphones without the noise isolation on, or when the battery dies. Even without it on if you're in a normal noise place (like waiting to board at the airport) the construction of the headphones around your ear will block a lot of the noise.Read full review
These headphones fold up, they have active noise canceling. They are super comfortable on the ears and head. The sound is wonderful and they last forever. I've had several other brands, always the parts are cheap and the plastic brackets break after a few weeks of use. These headphone are made of durable stuff and they never break. My first pair is four years old now and still in fabulous shape, except my toddler cut the cord so they are now useless. I only wish that instead of a pouch to store them in, they came with a hard case. Would make me feel good about throwing them into a backpack or gym bag.
I realize that some will question my 5 star rating of these headphones so allow me to explain. I bought my first pair in 2005 when I was flying frequently and sleeping in a noisy location every night. I first fell in love with them while on a 9 hour flight with a screaming child 2 rows behind me. Plugged in my MP3 player, flicked the switch and it was like stepping into a quiet room. OK, that may be an exaggeration but not too far off. My sanity was saved and I had no problem sleeping in coach. Now I had these for many thousands of air miles (and countless nights sleeping at LZ's and noisy billets and wouldn't give them up for any other. Unfortunately they are inexpensive (Under $35 at the time at Best Buy) and that means something has to give. Eventually the battery door catch broke (fixed with scotch tape)the cable gave out (repaired a couple of times) and finally the headband broke at the hinge. I could not find a replacement set at the time so settled on a Panasonic HC250 based on recommendations from others. The Panasonic's are crap in comparison. They are heavier, poorly reduce ambient noise, muffle the audio and will not stay on your head like the Phillips SBHCN110's. The only redeeming factor of the Panasonic's are they lay flat and store well in their hard case, whereas the Phillips fold up and slip in the pouch and can get damaged. Compared to other noise cancelling headphones in this class (under $50) these are the best ever made. (I tried many others at the time, too long ago to remember) In fact compared to more expensive Noise cancelling headphones including Bose I would rank these near the top! Seriously, I am not kidding here. Add a set of Peltor Combat Arms 97079 ear plugs (available on Ebay)and you could sleep through a mortar barrage (don't ask how I know this, it was too funny afterwards) Battery life is great right up until it dies, then you hate life! lol (I forgot to bring a spare battery) OK, seriously the battery life is really good considering how well these work and how I often forget to turn it off. Keep a few spare batteries on hand and it's golden! So why am I reviewing them now? Well there is a person right next to me who snores so loud (sleep apnea) that the cat runs away. (this is not a joke) I remembered how well these worked so I bought a set on here. My first night with them on and some light music/white noise playing was perfect! (and no, I was not wearing ear plugs with them) I can now sleep with minimal interruption of my sleep.Read full review
