POSITIVE VIBRATIONS was the last of TYA's 70's releases, and shows that the group had pretty much run out of creative steam. Alvin Lee had already released several solo albums, and when one listens to the album at hand, a strong suspicion does come to mind that he was holding back the best of his material for future non-group projects. That's not to say that there aren't several keepers here. The opener, "Nowhere to Run" has a nice Memphis soul feel to it, somewhat reminiscent of 70's Elvis. "Look Me Straight Into The Eyes" offers a somewhat complex arrangement with a fiery guitar jam exploding at the coda. Chick Churchill has only improved as a keyboardist, displaying considerable inventiveness on the Moog. The other guys, Ric Lee on drums, and Leo Lyons on bass, are solid, if not exceptional. Most of the material varies from softer ballads such as the title track and "Without You", to rather generic boogie run-throughs a la "Going Back to Birmingham" (Little Richard cover). There's nothing particularly offensive here, although "Without You" with its slightly sugary backing vocals does quickly wear out its welcome. It all just lacks the spark of inspiration, and it's not really a surprise that the group took an extended break, not surfacing again until 1989 with the lackluster reunion album "About Time". Diehards and completists will want this for "Look Me Straight Into The Eyes", which is indeed a superb track, and the last of TYA's string of extended boogie masterpieces ("Love Like A Man", "You Give Me Loving",etc.). Casual fans and newcomers might be better advised to start with "Cricklewood Green" or "SSSH".Read full review
I aquired this LP from my cousin in '74. I was a late bloomer TYA fan & started with their last album, so I like it the most of all their albums. I then purchased R n R Music to the World, Space in Time, etc. Most fans of TYA like the older TYA albums better. I also just now purchased "On the Road to Freedom" after all these years & am enjoying it alot. Am trying to decide if I'll splurge & purchase the older stuff like "Undead" or "Cricklewood Green".
