This is a perfect mini-series, with the plot unfolding slowly and the characters coming together as it moves along. There is plenty going on - it's hard not to sit and watch the entire 6 hours at once. We bought it because we couldn't stand waiting for the second part to arrive from that online movie rental service (notice how I didn't mention the name?!) We had already seen it through, but when our own copy arrived, we sat down and watched the entire thing through all over again. Simply fabulous. the writing is absolutely topnotch and the acting is worthy of the writing. One beauty of the mini series format is that the characters can be developed fully and you become attached to them and really get their virtues and flaws. More than once we were taken by surprise as the plot twisted and turned - but always totally plausibly and with flawless transitions from one point to another. One suggestion is to watch it with the subtitles. We found that some of the accents were hard to follow and believe me, you don't want to miss any of the dialogue - it's great. If you like intelligent, well made movies (or mini series) you will love this. We are also fans of The Wire and Deadwood and we'd put this right up there for quality - at the very least!Read full review
The American version of "State of Play" is superb, but the BBC original production which is six hours is AWESOME! From the first scene I was hooked. I didn't stop for six hours. What I didn't like about the BBC production was the ending. Power tends to corrupt; absolute power tends to corrupt absolutely. Although the ending achieved the English anthem the guilty culprit confesses, is caught, justice prevails, and all is well, it destroyed any realism in the character. It had to be that way. If it were any different, the movie would have ended half way through. Being a cynic I would submit in real life, the real ending would be that the guilty culprit didn't confess, justice didn't prevail, all is not well in the country, and he did it using his power and connections to get away with it! Other than the ending I didn't like, it's a killer six hours of on the edge of the seat suspense and intrigue.Read full review
Words cannot describe the tension of the first episode. Great screen play. Excellent acting. Do not listen to the commentary during the first episode...the voices of the director and Abbott screw up the flow of the action. I viewed 4 episodes in one evening as I couldn't stop watching. I only wish there was more where this came from.

This is one of the best BBC dramas I've ever seen. You are spellbound for the entire picture. It is @ 6 hours long, and has 6 episodes on 2 DVD's. Once you start, you don't want to interupt an episode for anything. There is an American version staring Russell Crowe, with Helen Mirren; I have purchased both. Don't waste your money on the American version; it is only 2 hours long, and has to refer to incidents in the script by inuendo, often leaving the viewer wondering "where did that come from ?". I have watched this movie several times now, and continue to be entertained by it..it's on my list of DVD to give as Christmas presents this year !
Taught and challenging. A complexed plot so you will need to pay attention especially to the dialog. I found Kelly Macdonald's heavy Glasgow dialect is often not clear and can tend to be annoying especially when it is important to listen. I was glad to see David Morrissey again who gives a stellar performance as Stephen Collins. I remember him as a vivid scene stealer in Our Mutual Friend. Also, the very watchable John Simm (Life on Mars)gives a very credible performance as Cal McCaffrey. If you are into political thrillers, then this one is for you.
