Great Hard drive! I was certain anything but a Maxtor, Western Digital or Seagate was the 'only' way to go becuase of past experiences with Samsung, Hitachi ect. brands from the late 90s. But I guess Samsung has their game together now becuase this drive is great! Its quiet, relativly cool running(after 3+hours usage) and fast!! Low latency and a good spindle speed 7200 too!
Good points, the 500GB is not any louder than the dead quiet 400GB, and it uses PMR which means that Samsung are not behind technology wise to the competition. Bad points they dont have the amount of NAND flash listed on their HHDD (Hybrid Hard Disk Drive) MH80S line of drives, Samsung have a huge advantage over all other HDD manufacturers, they make half of the world flash memory, I am expecting that the original line of drives will only have 64MB, 128MB and 256MB of NAND on the drives, however 512MB and 1GB would be superb, but maybe Samsung are holding out on the specs until other manufacturers release their drives, then Samsung could release their drives with more.
I bought this Hard Drive to use in an external enclosure to back-up my computers onto. This Hard Drive has plenty of storage space to completely back-up all three of my PCs and have room to spare. So far I have not had any problems with this drive.
I replace my 160gb hd with this 500gb hard drive because I was running out of space on my old drive. I did not have any problems at all cloning my old drive. I like that now I have three times the space. so far it's working great.
What's not to like? The surprising low price and the overall quality of Samsung products proved to be a winning combination. Would definitely buy this hard drive again and recommend it to others looking for bargain/quality computer hardware.
