I love this book. I bought his version back in the 1970s and read it cover to cover. I used it for a year before passing in on to my daughter and son-in-law. Recently friends were expanding their garden, and I wanted to buy this as a gift. I wasn't happy with the colorful, smart-looking new editions. So a bought a copy of the new one for it's updates and smart pictures and this one for it's original charme and ease of use. (My has notes all through it.) I gave them both for Christmas.

Been doing the Square Foot Gardening method for well over 20 years since I bought my first copy of Mel's Square Foot Gardening book when it first came out. That's when I first learned about Mel's method way back then. My gardening plots varied in size over the years, with raised beds, 4 ft wide X 20 ft long, in my mini farm area of 125 ft long by 35 feet wide, about 25 years ago, to just a 10 ft X 30 foot area 8 years ago, to now doing senior citizens gardening with just 23 gallon plastic tubs for container gardening. Learned a lot from Mel's book and his gardening TV Shows. He taught me things Mom never taught me, and, I'm a 3rd generation gardner. No matter what size your garden area is, you should get plenty of veggies from each square foot when following Mel's instructions in this book. Weather the book has a hard cover or a soft cover, it's all the same instructions for the Square Foot from Mel in his books.Read full review
Fantastic concept and detailed information. A lot of my fellow gardeners use this method at our community garden park, and they have the BEST veggies of all. I'm just now reading - cover to cover - and will be planting my fall crop with this method. Interesting read for a dry subject.

My parents were avid vegetable gardeners, but I could never duplicate the success they had with row gardening. I did notice, though, that they tended to get a lot of their produce harvest all at once, and they struggled to find good uses for the stuff they grew, even though it was of high quality. This book is written for beginners, but introduces an innovative way to use limited space for good and staggered produce yields. Can't wait to try the methodology, which is basically dividing growing space into 1 foot squares and dispersing the different crops grown so that you get rotation and complementary crops.
This is the first edition of Mel Bartholomew's SFG book (1981). I intentionally bought an old version. If you are new to Square Foot Gardening, I recommend the All New Square Foot Gardening book, THIRD EDITION (2018). I bought this old book for demonstration purposes in my classes as a Certified SFG instructor.
