I never really got all whacked out when it came to Super Mario Bros or its sequels. They are good games and I do appreciate what they contribute to the gaming industry because without them, video games as we know it wouldn't exist. They just couldn't hold my attention like many lesser games did. Maybe I am just adverse to things that everyone raves about. When I purchased a copy of SMB All Stars, I was surprised how a 16 bit upgrade changed how I viewed this beloved series. I am an old school gamer and I believe that graphical quality can make or break a game. This isn't always the case, but it is hard to play a game if it looks ugly and bland. I expected a nice graphic upgrade and I wasn't disappointed. The levels seem more alive and vibrant thanks to the superior power of the SNES. I am not saying the old Marios had terrible graphics for their time, in fact, they set the standard. But it is amazing how better graphics can enhance a gaming experience. The music in the Mario games has always been memorable. Its shiny and happy, helping set the tone of the games. I usually prefer the more intense, melancholy music of say, Castlevania, but that is a matter of tastes. The SNES has a nice sound chip and SMB All Stars makes good use of it. I particularly enjoyed how the sound echos in certain stages. One of the things that made the Mario games so accessible was their gameplay. Anyone could pick up the controller and play, but it had enough depth for hardcore gamers to impress their friends with how quickly they could beat the game or achieve a high score. The gameplay remains unchanged, for the most part, but why try to improve something that doesn't need to be improved. I will always prefer more adult and violent games as opposed to a fluffy and cuddly Mario game, but SMB All Stars gave me a chance to enjoy the classic games with a new perspective. I do own the old NES versions, but I am more likely to play SMB All Stars instead of the originals.Read full review
Super Mario All Stars is one of the all time great classic games. It features the NES Mario games including the Japanese and American Mario 2 and arguably the greatest Mario game, Super Mario Bros 3. Action platforming at its finest

There comes a time in all of our lives when we need a bit of nostalgia to slap us across the face to get us to smile again. For my parents it was the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever, for me and my peers, it was Nintendo. I recall renting (yes, renting) Super Mario Bros. 2 in 1989 and thinking it was the coolest game ever. How could they make a game this good?! Gaming got better afterwards, but it never left quite the impact with me as it did in the magic years of 1985-1993... the golden era of home gaming for us aging folks that remember Kidd & Play and Hammer pants! This collection of the Mario series from that wonderful time is the absolute best purchase I have made recently. Physically perfect - no defects of any kind other than those that were present when it was new. (You should remember that the NES and SNES were picky machines at times.) As for the good feelings and fond memories these games conjure up, it is nothing short of the perfect cure for a long and tedious work week. To sum up: Put on some Run DMC, grab some Cool Ranch Doritos, crack open some Barq's Root Beer and prepare to wear out your thumbs again!Read full review
