I had already read this book and loved it. I find when you listen to the audio book you seem to get a better understanding of the book. This book is one that will truly make you laugh and cry and think about what happened with the history of the Congo. It is also about how religion can twist a persons thinking about life. The way the book is told from the point of view of the women members of the missionary family is a concept that works so well that you feel you know who these women are. Barbara Kingsolver is a magnificent writer and I feel this book is one of her best. I highly recommend this book.
This is a gripping American family's brief history of living in Africa. Most agreeable are the separate interspersed narratives of each family member save for the father. Temporary survival in a primal environment cause the reader to identify with each individual's daily and cumulative life as part of the universal human condition. There are several very dark threads within this exquisitely written tapestry of a family's stark reality, and one's emotions are continually exercised. After reading the book, the language caliber of this wonderful read caused me to buy the audio book which I enjoyed even more. One caveat: Reserve the author's introductory summary for reading AFTER reading the 'story' as it serves far better as a conclusion than a beginning.
With more than fifty years of serious reading experience I can honestly put this book into the category of being one of the best ten books I've ever read. Stunning in it's depiction of overboard christianity, brilliant in it's historical overview and absolutly mesmerizing in it's character studies of the key individuals involved. I could not put this book down and I will read it again.
