feels like a very solid lens, but because it is plastic it is still comfortably light. autofocus is somewhat slow and noisy, but manual focus is very nice because there is plenty of travel in focus ring and therefore fine adjustments are easy to do. pictures are superbly sharp and contrasty. the bokeh is very smooth and pleasing. quality is on par with more expensive offerings from other brands - that's the tamron touch!
This is a good lens but is too soft of focus for me to enjoy. The colors are warm. Manuel focus is better for macro insects. I would not recommend this lens if you want a sharp detail image. If you like a soft focus arty picture then it would be great. For example portrait work.
If you are going to do macro photography, this is the lens for you. On an APS-C camera you are at 135mm which is a great distance. Also, since it is a full frame lens, if you ever go to full frame you have a nice 90mm. I would highly recommend this lens.
Positives - super sharp, relatively inexpensive, light weight, fun to use Negatives - plastic body but still feels substantial in manual focus mode, tends to hunt under lower light situations, autofocus is a little slow. I purchased this lens because of its reputation and following. It definitely lived up to its expectations and I plan on using it alot more than expected. This is a great buy at the current prices.
While a little lighter in feel than its replacement in the line, there is nothing cheap about this lens except the price. Whether you are on the fence about getting a Macro or just wanting to save a few pennies, between the sharpness, quality and smooth operation of this lens makes it a no worries no brainer. You will not find more for your money, this is it.
