If you are interested in tatting, this is a book you will probably enjoy. It is well worth it's cover price of $9.95. The history included in the book is fascinating, and I particularly enjoyed reading that. This book is illustrated in black and white and is only 128 pages long. If you are serious about tatting, it is not the only tatting reference you will ever need, but it is still an excellent book to have in your reference library. The author also includes a brief list of antiquarian books that contain tatting patterns. (I see a couple of these for sale on ebay pretty frequently! They are not as rare as you might think, although some of the available copies are reprints.) If you are interested in antique tatting patterns but you don't know which titles to look for, the book is worth buying just for that alone. This is not so much an actual pattern book as it is an instructional book of techniques. There are plenty of pictures showing lovely tatted examples of what you can make with tatting, but not step by step instructions for finished projects; instead you will learn step by step techniques for each knot or other technique. This was the first book I ever purchased on tatting. I did not know how to tat when I purchased this book, and was not able to successfully learn how to do it just from this book alone. (I tried, but couldn't figure it out.) At the time I did not know of any videos that were available. Nowadays there are several good tatting videos available. (Victorian Video makes 2 of them.) I was able to check them out at my public library- maybe you could get that lucky, too. If not, I do see them for sale occasionally on ebay so if you find them at a good price they are definitely worth owning. If you want to learn how to tat, I recommend getting a video in addition to this book. The video will help you learn how to tat more easily, but this book is full of great information that a serious tatter will want to refer back to.Read full review
Very nice history of tatting, and references of it throughout time. Not many patterns accompanied by wordy, confusing descriptions and few pictures.
