3 Phases Electrical Sockets

3-phase power sockets for homes and businesses

If you’re renovating a home and need 3-phase power, the best place to find all the gear you need is right here on eBay. 3-phase power electrical sockets come in several different styles, and you’ll find all of them here.

What is 3-phase power?

3-phase power has four wires, including 3 active and 11 neutral. It supplies power in both 240v, just like a normal household power socket, but it also is able to deliver 415v power. Essentially, it triples the amount of power you can access in a home and is perfect for larger homes with many power points. It’s also useful for big equipment like air conditioners and industrial machinery.

Different types of 3-phase power sockets

3-phase sockets come in a variety of different types, and they’re used for different electrical applications. Here are some of the main types you’ll find here on eBay.

  • 3-pin sockets: A 3-pin socket looks exactly the same as most standard wall sockets in Australian homes. These are used for any appliance that has a standard power plug.
  • 4 and 5-pin sockets: Less commonly used, but these sockets are required for larger industrial equipment, and some large air conditioners.
  • Weatherproof: Many 3-phase power sockets are weatherproof because their intended use is often outdoors. Think large outdoor lighting systems, speakers for events and more. Also, these are useful in large industrial settings where water or spills may be frequent.

You can also get sockets in many different amp levels. Commonly you’ll find they come in 10A, 20A, 32A, 50A and 63A. The amp level you’ll choose will be informed by the type of equipment you’re operating.

Switched or not switched

You can have 3-phase power sockets with or without a switch. Unlike normal household power points though, the switch is on a separate panel. It’s a very clear dial with ‘ON’ and ‘OFF’, to make sure you never make a mistake. Most 3-phase power sockets come with a switch, however, in some instances, it’s not necessary. For example, with an air-conditioner or other large equipment that doesn’t ever get turned off.

You can also get safety switches, which are common in an industrial setting or a work site. The safety feature is essentially a lid over the switch, meaning you can’t accidentally turn it on or off. These are also useful in outdoor settings where switches need to be weatherproof.
