This definitely rates up there with the Duke's best films. This film really contains the substance that made original movies what they were. Wayne portrays a cattle rancher leading 11 schoolboys on a long and treacherous cattle drive through 400 miles of the meanest country in the West after being abandoned by all of his ranch hands. A true and exciting adventure though it has tragic occurrences as well. In this role, he is a leader and teacher unlike his usual shoot-em up and rip-roaring Westerns most John Wayne fans are used to. A great film with a dynamic soundtrack by the legendary music composer John Williams along with breathtaking scenery throughout the cattle drive. A must see for all Western movie buffs! Family friendy...no commercials into which...are "not family friendly". John Wayne...it's on DVD (no worries about VCRs becoming phased out)...one of the best western movies that I have ever seen and it wasn't expensive to purchase. Excellent photograph...history, 3000 real head of cattle were used, along with 500 horses on the 400 mile cattle drive (it's on the DVD about the "production notes"...with alot of other extra info. Dislikes...???...wish that it could have arrived...like yesterday (joke). I can not think of having any dislikes...excellent family movie with feelings. It is one of the few "feel good movies".
John Wayne has been known to make some rough westerns before (The Searchers) and Cowboys is equally as good and a little rough to watch at times. It is a superb western with a superb leading man who has to move a bunch of cows with only children to do it with. They both learn a good deal from each other on the cattle drive and it is actually quite heartwarming most of the time. Bruce Dern, as per usual, handles the "bad guy" part of it magnificently.
This movie is one of the very best movies John Wayne ever made. Any teen age boy who has ever thought he would like to have been a cowboy in the 1880's will love this movie. Lots of exciting action on a cattle drive as Montana rancher Wil Andersen (John Wayne) turns school boys into cowboys.

This is a classic "John Wayne" movie that everyone can enjoy. It has John Wayne as an old man trying to move cattle on a cattle drive with children as his hands. Not the ordinary "western". There is times to laugh and times to cry when you least expect it things get worse or better. I wouldn't recommend this for very young children, but it's good for 10 and up! This is a classic that should be enjoyed for years to come. You won't be dissapointed if you purchase this one, you'll watch it over and over. A sure winner.
