I stumbled across this book on a day when I was desperate for reading material. Mainly bedridden due to illness, I still hoped for something really worthwhile (in the fantasy genre) and I wasn't disappointed. The djinni (and primary character) Bartimaeus, is somewhat like Disney's genie from Aladdin without the conscience. His dry humor, wit and outrageous attitude had me chuckling on more than a few occasions. The young magician, Nathaniel, doesn't posess a fraction of the charm of Harry Potter (the magicians in this series are more the villains than heroes). (Imagine a cross between Harry and Draco Malfoy.) Nonetheless, you have high hopes for him as well as the third principal character, Kitty, whose innocent mistake plunges her into the dark clutches of the magical world. From beginning to end, Stroud's tale of the three is original and highly entertaining. Golem's Eye doesn't tell you enough to spoil the first book (The Amulet of Samarkand), but enough not to be lost if you hadn't. (I'm reading Book One now, and have the third book, Ptolemy's Gate on order.) I don't know why this is considered a kid's book- young adult, more so. Like Harry Potter, only the first three books were truly appropriate for ages under 12. Violence, scary creatures, and adults behaving badly... Ever notice how the UK authors love placing their youth in jeopardy? They are either orphaned or estranged from their parents, abused in one way or another and facing unthinkable perils. :) Although I've made references to Harry Potter- there is no true comparison. This series takes you to an entirely different world and it is quite captivating. In my opinion, any adult young or old who enjoys fantasy fiction will love this book at any price.Read full review
This was a hardbound library book. NO issue with the library status and the book was in otherwise as described condition, but I wanted a softcover as they are easier for me to read and it would "possibly" have matched books 1&3... so....
Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: Pre-owned
Great book, the best outta the three in my opinion. You get to learn about all 3 main characters. The ending is shocking but satisfying.
The book was in good condition. I had read book one and enjoyed it so I found this book two. It was well priced and came the following week. I am still reading it, but will plan on reading book three as well!
