This is one of the best World War One books out there. Many previous books repeat the major moves and battles that took place, by in this book as well as the tv series, it goes another step. From the home fronts to the leaders who made the critical decisions and blunders, this book has it in pictures and words. One of the most important chapters in this book that caught my attention is the one on the Armenian Genocide, which was the first major genocide of the 20th century . Many people do not even know about it because so little has been written about it, as I previously stated. Being an American with an Armenian heritage I was proud that an author brought up this tragic event, when so many have not. One major reason is that Turkey, the country that was responsible for the Genocide, is a NATO ally, and still to this day refuses to accept what it had done. Even the strongest country in the world, the USA, doesn't want to disrupt relations, because of Turkey's strategic location and allowing the USA to have its bases there. In conclusion the book is well written plenty of pictures, and if you ever had a chance to watch the series, do not hesitate.Read full review
When this came out in 1996 you couldn't get it unless you were a PBS member and it would set you back a hefty $40, maybe more as you know how donations work. Donate $100 for the book kind of deal. The book is huge and loaded with pictures. I spent over and hour just looking at the pictures as I'm sure at the time this was the most Word War I pictures you could find in one tome. Very impressive. It's never been released on DVD, just another expensive VHS 4 pack at the time which is why I put mine on DVD so I'll be able to enjoy them for a long time. Get it if you can, mine was much cheaper that $40.
I HAVE A COPY OF SAME BOOK WHICH WAS READ COVER TO COVER. THIS IS A GIFT FOR MY BROTHER TO COMPANION THE VHS SET OF THE SAME NAME. TOO BAD THIS SUBJECT WAS NOT COVERED AS WELL WHEN I WAS IN SCHOOL. WAR IS NEVER A WINNING PROPOSITION FOR ANYONE.
Great book about the Great War. These events help to illustrate how the world changed as a result. This is a great supplement to have for either teaching or studying about World War I.
