This is the second lonely planet phrasebook I've used, the other being Italian, and this one is just as outstanding. The best little phrase book/pocket dictionary on the market. Turkish can be difficult to pronounce, but I find the phonetic transcriptions in this book to be very easy to understand. As with their Italian phrase book, this one is very logically divided into practical chapters dealing with every conceivable situation a traveler would encounter. In the introduction, the authors give a very concise, but very easy to understand overview of Turkish grammar, which can be daunting. It's well organized and the examples are easy to follow. All things considered the book's an absolute bargain and the best book in this category and format in my opinion. I might add I've taught German at the university level for over 40 years and the Lonely Planet phrase books are at the top of the class with their easy to follow grammatical explanations and the practical phrases they introduce. Finally these books also provide concise cultural notes to the various sections that help put the language and its use into a meaningful context.Read full review
