The gaming series UNREAL has been a hallmark for western first person shooting culture for over a decade. Ever since the first game hit the scene pushing aside the ever popular quake for status has the dominant expression of tecnology and programming for the first person shooter genre. Unreal Anthology though with it's problems is the best experience you can have with unreal and certainly a satisfying compilation. Pros - All the good unreal games! Unreal With Nali Expansion. Unreal 2 The awakening. Unreal Championship game of the year edition, and unreal tournament 2004 editors choice. Cons - It's sad to say unreal 1 does not support open GL unless you load the 227 patch, but when the expansion for return to nali becomes unplayable. Hopefully this problem will be fixed soon as of August 2010. Unreal 2 The awakening also has some hardware issues. For our modern graphics processors the drivers and hardware are not tailored for the games engine. It can be difficult to tweak everything enough to get a high framerate with good quality settings. Overall It's sad to see the developers did not take some time to polish this a little as far as content. It's simply just the 4 games packaged onto one dvd with a really easy to choose menu loader. The games DO NOT require the dvd to run which is nice. Conclusion? Great pack! Even includes a sound track CD. Everything is very nice and near perfect. It's only a drawback more time was not taken to polish this package so everything is perfect right out of the box with nice little extra tid bits and glitter, however with that said Unreal Anthology is all meat and potatoes.Read full review
Nice bundle collection, but has some flaws. It works best when installed on WinXP or 2000. UT2004 is the only game in the pack that can be played successfully on a 64bit Vista Computer. I installed the entire bundle on my 64 bit Visa PC and the only game that works great is the UT2004. The rest of the games in this pack have glitches on the 64 bit system and totally unplayable. I have this game pack installed on XP and all work perfectly. The one benefit of this game pack is that you can individually install UT2004, it has all of the latest patches and updates so you can play online. I did buy the UT2004 separately and it doesn't have all of the updates necessary to play online and it is a pain trying to get it updated. I called midway and users can get updates at www.filefront.com if you have 2004 separately. Bottom Line is that this Unreal Anthology game is excellent on XP and bad on 64bit systems unless you install UT2004 individually with all recent updates and patches. (Oh, by the way, Unreal Tournament 2 is like playing Halo, now I know where Halo came from.)Read full review
If you like any FPS or sci-fi buy this game you won't regret it! Even if it's just to get the original Unreal, it's still cheap and you get some bonus games thrown in. This game is an old favorite of mine, many features found in the engine were milestones that are still used today. Primary/Secondary functions for every weapon, brutal AI (the enemies almost seem to stalk you), cutting edge graphics for that time; all in all it's a very atmospheric game that will pull you in. Yeah the story line is typical, you're an prisoner on a prisoner ship that crash lands onto an alien planet... Pitch Black anyone? I'll have to research and see which came first haha. It's a very good shooter, scary for sure but that's about all it has in common with Doom and similar games. You don't fight hordes of enemies every other room you walk into, it's more well places encounters with tension buliding between. The music (or lack of at times) does an incredible job of conveying fear of what lies ahead. The transitions between levels are very smooth, gives you the impression that you are actually on a planet not just battling through a series of stages. In my opinion, the original Unreal was ahead of it's time and a finely crafted space journey. You also get Unreal 2 which I have never played, but look forward to!Read full review
I've been playing since the first Unreal as a kid (even though I wasn't supposed to haha) and it has become my favorite FPS of all time. I absolute love Unreal Tournament 99 and knowing the GOTY edition was included in this awesome Anthology I knew I had to get my hands on it. The install is quick and it even comes with a soundtrack with music from all 4 Unreal games included in this Anthology. The installation disc lets you choose if you want to install specific unreal games or all of them. Very straight forward and easy to install. This is by far the best FPS in history and for the price, it's practically a steal! Servers for both Unreal Tournament 99 GOTY and Unreal Tournament 2004 are still online so be sure to practice and get in there! There are also modded servers which provide hours and hours of fun. Custom maps, custom weapons, custom skins, custom game modes..I mean seriously. What more could you want? Buy it and experience it yourself!Read full review
The series is excellent overall and the content is amazing. Though without the support of ut2k3 and its vehicle demo leaves much to be desired. Very much like editing with "perfect drug" remixes! I am grateful for the DVD this series has now offered and how EPIC overcame the outdated compact disc.
