I bought this older generation iPod because I do not like the sound produced by the new iPod Classic and I was told that the 5th generation device had a much better digital-analog converter (DAC). And indeed, from the same files, I find that the sound that comes out this iPod is distinctly warmer and fuller than what comes out of the Classic. I use it both with an old Sansui amp - in complement to my turntable - and my audiophile Sennheiser headphones. It does not sound as good as a good old vinyl record though. But again, what is? I also like the smaller, more brick-like form factor than the Classic and the contrast between the black plastic cover and the steal casing. It is nice to hold. It also has a pretty good battery life. The only downside is that the black plastic cover is easy to scratch, hence requires more care than the metallic cover of the Classic. I also have an iPhone 4S, which is a marvellous device but I like to spare its battery. This is why I use the iPod 5 Gen for music and the iPhone for Apps (and calls).Read full review
