It's impossible to fault Marina Rossel's album. She does what she does perfectly well, exploring the habanera song form, whether on traditional or contemporary material. Nor can your fault any of the players, or the arrangements. Everything is clean and clear, and Rossel herself has a good, if not outstanding voice. So why doesn't this shine quite the way it might? Perhaps because Rossel, although perfectly competent, and with a fine voice, never projects her personality over the album, and so there are no sparks. Everything is just a little too polite, rather than caught up in passion. So while there's nothing wrong with this in the least, it's just not a CD that captures the heart. ~ Chris Nickson
