I do a lot of template work in MDF/Baltic Birch (making car/truck speaker adapters) and the solid carbide spiral bits I was using were only lasting a few months so I bought this one based on reviews. The initial cost may seem kind of high however to my surprise with periodic cleaning this bit lasted nearly 2 years of almost daily use which makes it a fantastic value IMO. I've tried this bit in numerous other materials from solid hardwoods to plywoods to double sided Melamine and it cuts flawlessly with absolutely no splintering or chipping due to the up/down cutting action of the compression design. A couple of things to note are this is a pretty heavy bit so it needs a powerful router at a slower speed to perform at its optimum (I tried it in my 2 1/4 hp Porter Cable 890 and it worked OK but it shines in my 3 1/2 hp Milwaukee 5625). I planned to get the first one sharpened but was told it would no longer cut flush due to the material loss so I just bought a new one. The only possible drawback for some may be the cutting depth however that is not an issue for me as most material I use is less than 1" thick (if you need to cut deeper you could use the top bearing design and cut in steps). All in all a fantastic bit that I would recommend to anyone who does template work or flush trimming.Read full review
