I loved this film....am not used to this star in a comedic role but he sure did it well....I also appreciated its somewhat historical aspect....i.e., based n the life of a real person....the main characters had some depth....

I'm a fan of some Woody Allen movies, some Sean Penn roles and jazz music in general. From all three of these perspectives the movie was dissatisfactory. I couldn't find the humor in this ficticious storyline. I couldn't see how or why there were several Oscar nominations from this film. Absolutely not recommended. Disappointing knowing that Woody Allen is a jazz musician and has produced and directed several excellent movies.

Watched this movie years ago when it first came out and remember how much I enjoyed it. Have not been able to rent or stream it anywhere so I finally decided to bite the bullet and buy a copy to keep. Sean Penn, who plays the protagonist, Emmet Ray, is exceptional in this role. Amazingly, he actually learned to play guitar for his character and studied under the jazz guitar great Howard Alden, who was amazed at how Penn assimilated the guitar. While Alden did play the actual guitar pieces that are heard on the soundtrack, Penn artfully pantomimed the guitar positions fairly accurately. Samantha Morton make her debut in this movie and is incredible in her role as Ray's mute girlfriend. Historically, this story may or may not be accurate or true but the visual attention to period detail is visually compelling. If you love jazz and particularly Gypsy Jazz you should find this movie enjoyable.Read full review

I am no columnist but I have watched this movie several times and it never fails to entertain. The life and times of the worlds self proclaimed "second" best guitar player. He's an opputunist and womanizer with little or no shame. But in his hands a guitar becomes something magical and you can't help but get caught up in the music it makes. The movie supplies excellent performances by all involved, especially Penn. But why listen to me, rent it, no better yet buy it for cheap online and watch it over and over again. It truley is one of those films. Hard to believe watching trains and going down to the dump could be so entertaining!
If nostalgia and longing for a by gone era are your thing this movie is pure delight. A GREAT STORY that hangs together makes you think laugh and cry. All the actors performances are the stuff classics are made of. Pure delight highly recommend this one if you like stories
