A brilliant and versatile machine which is relatively easy to use. I use direct connections from the mixer having created tracks on Cubase / Wavelab but there are a number of ways to connect to other sources. I tried to update the firmware but the instructions for downloading from the Zoom website are incorrect and I’ve not achieved it. The unit uses v 2.00 but v 2.10 (2020) is supposed to be available. It’s a fabulous unit. I used a Tascam similar model to this in the recent past but the quality of the Zoom recordings are vastly superior.

The H5 worked fine and without any issues for just over a month but then the crashing/freezing started to occur. When switching the H5 on it crashed/froze up. When attempting to record, the unit crashed/froze up. The H5 crashed when I put slight pressure on the case under the record button with my finger. The only way to reset the machine was to take out a battery and put it back. But the crashing/freezing kept happening intermittently. People have had similar issues of freezing/crashing with the Zoom H4N, which makes me think this is a quality control issue (a search on Google should reveal this). The H5 could have been a good sound recorder, as the sound quality recorded is good and it is easy to use when it works, but the build quality and quality control issues let it down for me.

As always with zoom the H5 is a quality product. Smaller than I expected but packed with features and many other mic accessories available. It's only major flaw as with all these field recorders is the awful rubber coating. In time with handling the rubber devulcanises and breaks down. This starts off with a slight tacky feel when handling to it slowly becoming like it's covered in glue. There is no real cure for this other than using a solvent to remove this awful tacky rubber. Whoever decided to cover the products in this must have been mad. Its the only bad design. If its brand new it will be fine, but after a year or so it will be annoying to handle. Check online about this problem, it's a common one.

I bought samples from here there and everywhere only to come to the conclusion that they are being used by everybody. Make your own samples. Record what you want and then bend it in software. You get real satisfaction from this method.

I bought this to record my voice for voiceover. The great thing as well is that it acts as an interface. It has good pre-amps also. Good for starting out in VO or for use when travelling as a VO out of your studio. It's a very well built, sturdy device and simple to use. It also provides Phantom Power to your mics, not bad from a low voltage battery source!
