The evolution of the adidas Tubular X
Initially released in the 90s, the latest evolution of the Tubular 93 with its car-tire-inspired sole was reworked and re-released in 2014. Dubbed the adidas Tubular Runner, this modernised silhouette has seen different iterations and changes over the years.
Once the new design became a success, the Tubular family was then expanded in 2015 to include additional models which used various uppers with neoprene Tubular outsoles. Several colorways were released in both high-top and low-top silhouettes called the adidas Defiant, Nova, Viral, Doom, and the high top Tubular X.
Tubular X Primeknit technology
Inspired by the original Forum basketball shoes released in the 80s, the adidas Tubular X high top was the first model to feature Primeknit technology. This Tubular X Primeknit silhouette had a breathable upper structure with a high collar and a synthetic neoprene overlay with a ribbed X-shaped design.
The adidas Tubular X was then re-launched again in 2017. The main differences with this model was the white sole up to the toe, the gum-sole heel, and the original synthetic overlay was replaced with an X-shape in a contrasting Primeknit colour.
Yeezy & the X factor
And unlike many other models of shoe, the X in Tubular X does not indicate a collab between adidas and another person or brand. Instead, the X is actually a reference to the X-like design on the heel which is complemented by durable mesh.
