This is probably Canon's best non-L zoom lens. Feels very well made, reliable and nice to use. Not the lightest of zooms but this probably reflects its quality. Its range of 15-85mm is excellent for crop sensor cameras, making it an excellent single lens to own. If you want a longer zoom (and willing to sacrifice some of the wide end), then a good alternative is the Canon EF-S 18-135mm IS nanoUSM, which costs about the same (used).

I have not yet taken many photographs with this lens but it is already evident that it is the best standard zoom I have ever owned. It seems to be the perfect lens for the 550D body, bringing out all the 18MP of detail and giving beautiful smooth skin tones and colour transitions. The stabilizer allows me to take hand-held portrait shots at 1/10 second and 70+mm focal length. I like the fact that the manual focus ring is up at the body end of the lens. I can focus manually and still hold the camera properly. The distance scale under the window is also a good feature. I look forward to trying video with manual focus. The 15-85 is heavier than the (also very good) 18-55 kit lens but I shall carry it gladly. This is my one-lens solution for 99% of the pictures I want to take.
It’s a bit heavy but build solid as a rock . Perfect focal length range for everyday use . Autofocus incredibly fast , smooth and quite. Sharpness allows you to see every hair at your cats fur . Plus great value for money. You can use it with crop or full frame too .

I opted for this one in place of the standard 18-55mm stock lens that came with my Canon DSLR. I'm really pleased with it. It's a bit chunkier than I expected but it's a great lens to have in your bag for both wide angle landscape stuff and more focuses shots.

I bought the 17-85 lens for my Canon 350d six or seven years ago. I swopped the 350 for a 400 and last year splashed out and got the 7d. Slightly better and twice as heavy. The 17-85 died a week before going to Normandy. This lens is slightly faster, brighter image on the screen and down the plughole. It is rated superior when one ploughs through the forums. This lens on this camera takes better pictures than I do. Scott borrowed it to film a low light interview on HD. Brilliant! What is wrong with it? It is too heavy and too expensive!
15mm to 85mm is a great range for a walk around lens. Comfortable size and weight when used on the 7D body. The build quality of this lens is solid and while Canon only manufacture L series lenses for cameras with full frame sensors this lens has many of the L lens qualities. The 15mm-85mm lens is tack sharp, AF is fast, silent and accurate and Image Stabilisation allows you to shoot 4 stops slower. While not a cheap lens it is good value for what it provides. The construction is plastic but it is solidly built and feels like it could withstand a lot of heavy usage. It shows no sign of lens creep. Some vignetting is noticable at both extremes of the zoom range but stopping down eliminates most of this and is is easily fixed with software. My biggest complaint is that it is not a cheap lens, a hood is an essential item, but again Canon leave the customer down by only providing hoods as standard with L series lenses. The 15mm-85mm lens is an amazing all around leave on lens and is the one lens that all Canon owners should have. It is great for portraits or landscape and the 15mm coverage will make sure you always get the picture even in the tighest of situations.Read full review
The lens arrived packed safely, was exactly as described in listing. Pictures taken and results are clear and I am happy with it.

The quality of clarity and sharpness is so much better than the 18-55mm kit lens with my 2000D camera. A pleasure to own and use.

Had read about this lens as a good all rounder for travel photography. I love it! From wide angle to take in buildings and architecture to zooming in for close up portrait. Still to try it out on sustained travel, but I haven't taken it off my camera since I got it.
