If reliability and performance stand at the top of your list, the "ancient" Nikon D3s is an amazing camera. Yes, it's heavy, but that weight helps steady my hold when using long lenses [200 mm, 300mm, e.g.]. The RAW files are good for enlargements up to 16x20 inches [with post-processing]. The low-light performance is excellent. And I can use just about all my Nikkor lenses [AI, AI-S, manual, e.g.]. Yes, the new crop of high-end DSLRs and mirrorless cameras can be all the rage, but if your interest lies primarily with photography, you'll have more than enough features on the D3s to keep you ahead of the game, whether amateur or professional. However, you still have to do your part and understand the fundamentals of taking a good photograph.

I bought this camera because I needed something with the voice memo feature. I was going to get a D4s, but the price on this was just too good to pass up. This camera still rocks! The image quality is great, and it's still one of the top high ISO performers on the market. Where it falls behind is shutter noise, and low light AF, which, while still good, isn't exactly cutting edge. Let me be clear, I'm a pixel-peeping professional who also shoots a D800 and a D750. I've also extensively used loaner D810, D4s and D5 from NPS. So when I tell you the D3s is still a relevant camera, you can take it to the bank.

The Nikon D3S is just what I needed to shoot poorly lit subjects. The high ISO performance gives me higher shutter speeds when I can't use flash to freeze moving subjects. And working with ambient light indoors becomes much easier. The noise levels at high ISO are manageable in post processing, focusing and metering are excellent and the file size is big enough for large prints if you limit cropping. I use this with a D3X for consistent handling between the two bodies. Excellent kit.

In one word " a fantastic " camera. I bought the D3s for its ability to take pictures un low and difficult light and the D3s is unsurpassed in this area. This camera surpasses the my D700 by a wide margin on virtually all fronts. Yes The D3s is heavy, but handles very well and is superb in balance and can tolerate the stresses of long and heavy lenses. I also love how smooth the shutter action is, it makes for great hand held pictures at slow shutter speeds. The area where I see improvement is in the interface and menu layout, they are extensive but not very intuitive. I love this camera.
Released in 2009, it was ground-breaking at the time, and is still a strong, reliable workhorse. I have newer, better bodies, but I do some work that just requires a solid performer that can handle lots of clicks. The D3s shines for that work. For the price on the used market these days, the D3s is a bargain considering what it can deliver. Fast AF, good in low light, 9 FPS, and just keeps on going ... and going.

Nikon did it again with the D3s, it's fast, easy to use, great for sports, journalism and everyday use (if you can afford it). I love the way it feels, solid build, weather seals, FX sensor, 100% view finder super accurate AF tracking system, best of all, the LOW LIGHT performance, it's joy to use. Nikon's color accuracy is great as well, just like Pentax systems; both brands beats Canon left and right, Canon produces crappy colors under artificial light. I recently sold my D700 and decided to upgrade. Buy the D3s, you will love it!!!!!!
I personally owned all the right lens (14-24, 24-70, 70-200 vrii,24 and 85 f1.4) as well as dx lens. I started with the D90 and the associated lens (18-200 dx, 17-55 dx, 60 macro and 105 micro). The D90 cannot hold a candle to the d3s. I have read numerous reviews. They all indicate the d3s has amaszing high iso, which is true. However, the daylight picture quality is amazing. In other words, what the reviews are not saying, is the D3s has amazing picture quality. The colors, resolution, depth of field, etc, are all better. More to the point, a highly compressed JPG taken on D3s is better than most RAW taken on other cameras. The D3s produces amazing photos that are untouchable.
There are many bells and whistles on this camera. I am amazed on how easy it is to use and moving around in the menu. The placement of controls are user frendly and in the right location for me, I have large hands. Nikon set this camera up perfectly for my use. I upgraded from the D300 and I just love the FX feature. Yes the camera is a little on the heavy side but it seems to be comfortable to use with a 70-200Vr II lense. Great quality for the price. The ISO is amazing, little or no noise when set to 12800 and above. I am excited to explore more about this camera. I have only used it twice and after the first couple shots, I was sold. Nikon Thank you for another great camera, but please stop making them better, your killin me here. My wife say this is my last upgrade and I really do not think I would need anything better.Read full review
The D3s is everything we had hoped for - this is the most amazing camera I've ever owned: previous models are D60, D80, D300, D700. The D3s is not just an improvement, it blows them all away for capturing movement in low light (Dance - in case you were making up something else in your minds). Nikon hit a home run with this one! I purchased it because although my D300 was a fabulous "outdoors" camera, it just wasn't cutting it for low light conditions. After I bought this and we started comparing, my wife had to get one also, it was that much better than her D700, which is really saying something! It helps to be using genuine Nikkor glass, of course, but comparing the same lenses (50mm f1.4, 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8) on the 3 different models the D3s won hands down. If you can find one and need to shoot indoors or outdoors in low light, (does everything else as well), this is the camera for you.Read full review
My favorite model from Nikon is the D3S. I owned one prior to this one and shot 500K clicks, Its still shooting fine but I needed a backup! It's a great studio camera and I love the color tone and softness I can get with natural light.
