I bought this camera as a replacement of a very old R4, and another R3, and also as a gift. It was my favorite Ricoh camera for a long time, so I was very happy to find a new one. I'm aware of some limitations regarding IQ, but I also know some ways to take the best of it. Its not a camera to work in full auto mode, we must know how to tweak some settings to get better results, and we have to do some post processing too. It has some weak points on the lens mechanics, not a good camera for hard wind conditions, but Ricoh support always resolved my problems with the other cameras (during warranty period). As an old, outdated model, it cannot be compared with new ones. Its a kind of a cult camera, so when we buy one we already know what we are getting.
I NEEDED A GOOD CAMERA . FOR TAKING CLOSE UP DETAILED PICTURES . I HAD TRIED MY USUAL CAMERA ,WITH POOR RESULTS . AS I WAS NEW TO E-BAY I LEARNED THE LESSON FAST . WITHOUT GOOD PICTURES MY INCOME FROM MY LISTINGS SUFFERED . E-BAY BEING AS GOOD TO BUY FROM AS WELL AS SELL, BECAME MY FIRST HUNT FOR MY RICHO CAPLIO. JUST SEARCHING CAMERAS I DISCOVERED THE CHOICE I NEEDED TO LOOK FOR AND WITHIN A DAY OR TWO FOUND THE BARGAIN I WAS LOOKING FOR . SINCE THEN I THINK THE CAMERA HAS PAID FOR ITSELF IN BETTER BIDS . TAKING PICTURES WITH MY RICHO CAPLIO , IS PART OF THE FUN I AM HAVING . AND BOOSTING MY CASH FLOW.
I bought this camera in error, strange as it may seem but at the time I could have kicked myself, for I was seeking a camera with an optical viewfinder and this one had a duff screen, so pretty useless. But as I am a tinkerer, I took it apart and in doing so I became highly impressed with the build quality of the camera, for it is truly excellent. Anyway, poking around inside the camera, trying to remove the LCD screen,(which is a screen common to many cameras, a Casio screen no less, so parts are easy enough to source), I decided against my normal better judgement to power the camera up, and it worked, the screen sprang into life, so the camera was re assembled after I cleaned the tft connectors and now I have a superb little camera which despite the fact that there is no optical viewfinder, has done me well so far. The reason I sought an optical viewfinder, was my last camera was my college camera,a Fuji A100 which took AA batteries, which it ate at an alarming rate, a costly camera to run and was always flat when I needed it, but the Ricoh had rechargeable lithium ion batteries which power the delightful screen without any problems, so my problem solved. As to the operation of the camera, I am very impressed, that LCD screen is truly impressive and the camera functions, 'WOW', more than enough for a compact, but at the same time because of what it can do, a good back up for my DSLR camera, and the memory cards fit my Macbook Pro, so no messing around with card readers and that for my forthcoming college is a real help as my course of study is image heavy. Apparently it as sound recording functions and video, but I don't need that, a stills camera it is for me, and a truly excellent one at that. Oh, and it is tiny ! The only criticism I have for the camera is the camera 'off' lens cover, it is of the leaf shutter design and so is very fragile, very easy to poke a finger or anything other in there with whatever consequences, so as the camera will be living in my college bag, I will have to invest in a hard case for it.Read full review
