This is the quintissential cop movie that set a standard that has been copied ad nauseum. I bought this movie as I was originally looking for another Steve McQueen movie called The Hunter. I found this and realised I could only remember bits of the chase scene. It's a classic so I bought it and that chase sequence is remarkable when he's chasing the Dodge Charger in his 69 Mustang. It really wrote the book on chase scenes although if you're an observant film buff you'll notice they recycle the same 3 cars over and over. The white 68 Firebrd, the Green Volkswagen Bettle and the Yellow Cab during that chase and at various times during the movie. The movie itself is excellent. I couldn't stop watching it. Not only is it an interesting story but it's got a great look to it. Kind of a time capsule. As for the bad guys, they're 1960's bad so they really aren't all that threatening. That's probably more of a product of being desensitised all these years of watching films like Scarface. But the mobsters are no Tony Soprano and the crazy guy is so obvious and stereotypical that you can't imagine that he would so easily sit across the road from Bullitt's house in a beat up van with a high powered rifle and no one notices. Overall the film still holds up 45 years later and Steve McQueen really is the coolest guy ever.Read full review
