A dream set for fans of Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Pros:
- Special Longer Version in 4K a real treat for any serious fan of the movie
- Fold out box set doesn't take up a lot of space
- Director's Edition has gorgeously updated visuals and sound
Cons:
- Special Longer Version only reason to get this set, otherwise poor value for casual fans
- Included memorabilia mostly meh, except for booklet
- Box is just cardboard, need to handle with care
I don't need to tell long time fans of the Special Longer Version that this release is welcome and long overdue. The only caveat is that the sound is only Dolby 2.0 rather than the Dolby Atmos of the Director's Edition, but it's acceptable using Dolby Pro Logic.
For others that may not care for the SLV but still want to see The Motion Picture at its best, save your money and just get the Director's Edition on its own. The DE's upgraded picture, effects and sound are fantastic. Some would argue that they’ve gone overboard on some of the visual enhancements, but that’s a matter of taste. Overall, the DE is unquestionably the best that this movie has ever looked to my eyes and the best it’s ever sounded to my ears.
However, I still love the SLV as it's the most "complete" version of the movie, even if it doesn't flow as well as the DE. That's one of the benefits of watching a movie at home: I can sit back and relish every minute, with not a care about the running time. I’ve heard the argument that the SLV will only appeal to hard core fans of TMP, but I like to think even casual Trek fans would have some passing interest to see how those extra scenes might alter their view of the film. And it’s only 12 minutes of extra footage, interspersed neatly throughout the movie. I don’t think those extra few minutes will ruin viewers. If you never liked TMP at all, the SLV won’t change your mind. But for those that are willing to give the SLV a chance, they may find the additional scenes rewarding – and could even make the movie a more satisfying experience than the DE.
The memorabilia in the set is more kitsch than anything of value, except the booklet that offers some of the production art and behind-the-scenes photos from the film. I still highly recommend the box set for aficionados of ST:TMP.
