By far... ok maybe not by far, but by a good deal, THE sharpest, NON-L Series Lens I have used, (I don't own any L-series Lenses). I have been Privileged enough to get my hands on this lens, and I must say it is truly outstanding. Not only does the "0" setting deliver stunning sharpness, but the HUGE Aperture takes full advantage of the lenses 52mm barrel, and provides stunning colors as well as stark contrast. The Soft focus Feature, can make any amateur Photographer, feel like they work for LifeTouch, or Glamour Shots, While I found the "1" setting nice, to keep sharpness in the center, I feel the need for the bump up to the "2" setting to really bring the shot together. While alot of people do post editing photoshoots, if you dont feel up to editing EVERY picture, This Lens will give you the power to just shoot, and upload, great pictures, with out the POST-OP procedures, Soft focus or straight up. By far, this is the most important lens to own... aside from a 50mm... Ideally, your loadout should contain this 135mm lens, a 50mm lens, and a mid-range to 300mm zoom lens...Read full review
This is a great lens! The build seems a bit fragile, but you must understand that this is not part of Canon's premium lens series. Aside from a lens exterior that is more prone to damage, the interior lens glass is still top of the line. You can focus on objects both near and far while maintaining image sharpness for objects in focus, and you get a smooth blur for everything out of focus. Although you should consider many different types of lenses for a wide variety of applications, I believe this lens can be used in just about any situation. I am very happy that I made the purchase. The images that this lens helps to produce are beautiful.
This lens provides excellent results as a portrait lens. I am using it fully open at the 2.8 f-stop and the result has been beautiful portraits that really project out in almost a 3 dimensional effect from blurred natural backgrounds. I am very impressed and delighted with the results. I was also very interested in trying out the soft focus feature. With the lens fully open, best results seem to come with a setting of about 1/3 of a unit on a scale of 2. (A little bit goes a long way.) I think that some back-lighting may be helpful in achieving a "dreamy" effect, but I have not yet experimented with that yet. So far, I prefer using it as a standard 135mm portrait lens with sharply focused subjects and without selecting the soft focus effect. It provides a bright view through the lens. I am using it with Canon 5D and 5D Mark II bodies. Very good value.Read full review
I absolutely love this 135L on my 5D. This lens is great for subject isolation and background blur. The "bokeh" created by this is super creamy and smooth. There is something indescribable about this lens and the only way to describe is that its absolutely "magical" on full frame. The lens is super sharp wide open at F/2.0. The colors and contrast are what you would expect of a lens of this caliber. The build quality is top notch and "L" quality as expected. The auto-focus on this lens is lightening fast and never misses or hunts in low light. This lens is one of the most legendary Canon lenses ever made. If your thinking about getting this lens, don't think, just buy it! You wont regret owning this amazing piece of engineered glass. This lens is definitely here to stay in my bag or a long time.Read full review
I bought this to shoot my first wedding where I used all prime Canon L series lenses mounted on multiple bodies. This lens helped me out during the ceremony, it was a formal indoor Catholic wedding. I could have probably gotten away with my 70-200 2.8 IS which my second shooter had mounted though. Out of 500 ceremony shots around 90 were with this lens. I'd say it's worth it if you can get one in the $1000 range. The f2 really helps you out if you need long shots during receptions too, but I found out that I could get away with my 80mm 1.2 because it's easier to get close during something casual like a reception. 10 feet off the dance floor when a couple is doing their dance is very reasonable.
The sharpest lens Canon makes. Very sharp even wide open, and at f/2 it provides beautiful background blur and good low light shooting. I use it everyday on each outdoor senior portrait I do. If the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is too pricey for you, and you don't mind a fixed length lens, this is the lens for you. A close second would be the 200mm f/2.8L USM fixed lens, with almost identical design, but at a longer focal length.
What makes this fast portrait lens so unique is its ability to do soft/sharp pictures at the same time. It mimics the old Rodenstock Imagon lens used with 4x5 bellows camera. I have not been able to duplicate this result in Adobe Photoshop. The color is exellent almost like my 70 to 200L IS lens and when taken off of soft mode, is extreemly sharp as well.
By far the most amazing Canon lens I have used to date. Lightweight, super sharp, gorgeous bokeh, reasonable price for an L lens, can't say enough good things. Definitely a must have for any serious photographer. Could be tricky for some due to the focal length, but that can really be said about most primes. Switched back over to prime lenses only and loving it.
I just bought this lens and took some test shots with it today. The lens has the reputation of being super sharp and it lives up to that reputation. The shots were very clear. I took shots with a lot of small detail and the lens captured the detail beautifully. It is also light enough to use without a tripod. I own two Canon L series zoom lenses but the 135mm is the best at capturing detail. I am very happy with the lens.
This is one of my favorite, if not my favorite, lens from Canon. I took my best 2 pictures with this lens as the San Diego zoo! I regret every day that I sold it and long to have it again. The speed is fantastic at f/2.8 and the focus is lightening fast, too. The colors and clarity is out of this world. If you can pick up for a bargain, you have robbed someone... if you pay just less than what it would sell new, then you still have a great deal. I need this lens again!
