Magnavox Secrets
Magnavox/Funai would be much better and trustworthy if they didn’t make products that require a “soft” or “hard” reset procedure. What makes matters worse is that nowhere in their owners manuals or website is this procedure mentioned. What generally happens is after a power interruption, short or long, these DVR’s “ lose their ability to operate properly “. This is when most people just assume it’s over and the machine won’t work anymore. I feel Magnavox put this feature in purposefully hoping customers would just pitch the units and buy another one. This unit needed a hard reset, then all settings reset such as the clock, etc. Once that was done, it operated just fine. If you want to know the reset procedure, I’m not including it in this review. Sorry. The information is out there, but you’ll have to dig deep for it.Verified purchase: Yes

An older model with useful features
While, due to the way modern cable boxes work, you can't watch another program while recording on this particular model. BUT... it does have its advantages. For example: My wife uses it to record her favorite soap opera while she is at work. Also, if you record something you really like, you can burn it to a disc and even edit it. It has variable picture qualities that allow for more or less total recording/storage time according to your needs. Great DVD-HDD Recorder!
This is a great DVD-HDD Recorder. This is my 2nd Magnavox MDR513H/F7 (320GB). Also have a Magnavox MDR515H/F7 (500GB). Also have two Toshiba VHS-DVD Recorders (Magnavox and Toshiba menus look identical). All are used and all work great. Had spare remotes so missing remote was not a problem. The warranty sticker was broken but no problems encountered. This recorder will be used with a new HiSense U7 55" television. Over-the-air (aerial) recording will be used. Television is set for Basic but Google setup has not been done yet. Recording for only over-the-air is the goal. The channels scanned okay. Great component for everyday program, record and play.
This the second one I've purchased. I wanted one as a back up in case the one I already have wears out. Even tho I've had it for almost 6 years and it still operates like the day I bought it! I heard that refurbished ones don't work too well. I've gotten so used to recording and watching at my leisure, I don't know what I'd do without it! Anyone with antenna TV, this is must addition. Let you watch programs when it fit your time. Want share a program with a friend? If they have DVD player you can make a copy on a write able DVD disc and they have their own copy. Great recorder, a bit pricey
My only quibble is that the latency from start of DVD recording is several seconds, making precision splicing of material separated by unwanted matter difficult.
