I bought a TomTom as a replacement for a Garmin Streetpilot III because of TomTom's reputation for ease of use and configuration. However, I have found that many of the advertised features are not there (yet), as TomTom have not yet released the software. In particular, additional voices, map correction, and add speed camera are not available. There are also features on the previous generation Garmin which are not present on the TomTom, such as the whole concept of waypoints, (which, on the TomTom have to be added as "Favourites" or "Points of Interest") and the ability to adjust the road speed for different vehicles (The last of particular interest to HGV drivers, or caravanners). TomTom uses speed limits, as the system of using average users' speeds on different roads isn't up and running yet. I dislike the fact that the maps are only present on the device, and not on the computer, which can make route planning a real pain. I checked one route against the Garmin, where I had confidently turned right when the device told me to turn left. Interestingly, the Garmin came up with the same longer and more time consuming route, but the error was easy to spot on the computer screen, and easily corrected by inserting a waypoint on the more direct route. Doing the same thing on the TomTom is a real pain. There are some features which are an advance on the Garmin. The actual position finding is a lot more accurate with the unit on the dash (I had to use an external antenna with the Garmin), but I think it would still be improved with an external antenna, which would have to be a re-broadcast type as the TomTom has no external socket. The touch screen is a lot better, and the device is easier to use when in the vehicle (Remember, however, that I am comparing with an obsolete Garmin unit)Read full review
Its an excellent piece of kit, the only drawback is the computer voice that is used for voice commands and announcing street names is Polish on the model I bought. No selectable English computer voices and there is no facility to download computer voices on this model. The directions are in an English recorded voice. There are several downloadable recorded voices but no computer ones.
tomtom is by far the easiest satnav on the market. this offers live which within 2 days of owning has become invaluable to me as a hgv driver
