    Neil Oliver Up Close and Personal

    A good documentary from BBC on the history of Scotland. Neil Oliver, the narrator, presents a good and engaging/entertaining overview of Scottish history in 10 episodes plus two bonus episodes. Since I'm not an expert in the subject I cannot attest to its verasity. The scenary is spectacular. The production quality is good. May be, there is a bit too much of Neil Oliver closeups and footage of him strolling about. The disks themselves are coded for non-U.S. consumption but it was easy to rip them on the computer and stream them to the big TV.

    Top Drawer Documentary Series

    Neil Oliver created an outstanding overview of Scotland's rich history and delves into some areas of interest that can be easily overlooked by even the most astute historians. If you want to access Scotland's history from the earliest beginnings to present, this is the series that will give you what you need to feel you've gotten a comprehensive grounding. It's also beautifully filmed and so thorough that you'll want to watch it more than once, and keep it for future reference. In my estimation, it's one of the best historical series made to date, and I spent a lot of time looking for an affordable copy. I'd urge anyone with a bent for studying history to get this series to help with an intensive study of Scotland, or to use as a lead-in to other areas of interest.
