The Name of the Rose is set in a mucky, Italian Medieval Franciscan abbey, with Sean Connery as William of Baskerville, a Franciscan monk who arrives with his apprentice, portrayed by 17-year-old Christian Slater in his first major role, to answer charges of the Papal Inquisition regarding Franciscan belief that in copying Christ's example of poverty, they were saying the Church should not amass wealth. The task of the Inquistor, played exquisitely and chillingly by F. Murray Abrams was to determine whether Christ was poor or rich. At the moment of their arrival, the abbey is beset by a series of mysterious deaths which the abbot asks Baskerville to investigate. Using logic and theology, Baskerville brilliantly digs into the mystery, incurring at the same time the animosity of the Inquisitor, an old adversary. Well-acted, at times morbid, this is an engrossing film, narrated long after the facts by an old Adso of Melk, played by Slater.Read full review
Pretty good movie. Good video quality. Beautiful, eerie setting. Interesting plot. F. Murray Abraham is a great villain. The tone of the movie is kinda uneven - serious, dark, funny, sexy, weird - but that might be intentional. If you're into dark, eerie medieval stories, this one is worth a watch.

I had been looking for this in Blu Ray for some time, most being extremely expensive. I first saw this film years ago and wanted oit for my collection. Sadly it has gone out of production , so you're gonna pay a pretty penny for a copy.

I have loved this movie since it was first released. An excellent and different role for Sean Connery and budding stars as children.

Possibly Sean Connery's best performance. Good insight into monastery life and fears. Also depicts the cruel misguided inquisition process.

Wonderful movie, decent transfer but definitely shows it's age - notable grain. This is the longer directors cut, not the US theatrical cut. Still a definite upgrade over the DVD, finer detail in many scenes, though never really eye popping.
