I bought this product as I couldn't afford the f2.8 version and wanted something that would give me an extended range for photographing wildlife with crisp optics and very sharp focusing. I had read reviews of this lens online and it had been described very favourably. Also it had been listed as being a good combination with a low-ratio teleconverter (1.4). Having now had this lens for some time I am very impressed by the performance and I find myself leaving it on the camera with 1.4x TC as my standard lens. The autofocus is very fast (ideal for wildlife photographs) at F4 and also eerily almost completely silent. The build quality is very high and rugged. It is a heavy piece of glass but I have found it can be hand-held effectively at 1/1000s shutter speed settings on my Nikon D7000 and will give excellent sharp results. The tripod mount seems to vibrate slightly on shutter release even though it seems very solid and it might be worth looking at after-market tripod mounts for this lens or be sure to use mirror up on a tripod for slow speeds. Overall, however, very fast, very crisp and, surprisingly, I could even get it to autofocus at f8 with a 2x teleconverter fitted - with excellent results, (although for birds in flight the 1.4x is the limit for a reasonable 'hit ratio' of keepers). I bought this lens because I needed a lens for wildlife that still kept me very mobile and manageable without the need for a cumbersome tripod . This lens is also very sharp as you would expect from a Nikon prime lens. I'm very happy.
Fantastic lens for Bird and other wildlife photography. This lens coupled with a teleconverter produces great shots. Absolutely recommended to the serious wildlife photographer.
When I used this lens for the first time it was in pitch dark I could see well then I focused on far away objects I saw them very close awesome lens.
