I bought this 1st Gen iPAD to replace one I lost 3 years ago. In the interim we bought an iPAD Air, which I find has too many touch-sensitive features on-screen, so that I was always invoking commands that I didn't want. The 1st Gen also has the larger screen size and the 'heft' that I missed in the Air; and I actually love the old-style graphics on the Notepad, Calendar and Music player. The only drawback with the 1st Gen is that its Operating system is too old to handle many of today's high-powered apps.

Not many apps are compatible for the 1st Gen iPad. You cant use it to view PDFs that you try to sync via iTunes. You have to upload them to Online storage and download it to the iPad itself. However, not all is bad..... Dump a bunch of movies on it or songs and it is great for road trips, or just laying on your bed to read the news. It was a snap to jailbreak it (if you really need to get down and dirty). If it would at least sync my PDFs I would have rated higher.

I LOVE my iPad. I have found that it is great for short business trips, vacations and the like. What I didn't expect, but love is that it's also great for the kitchen! (family calendar, recipe file, weather, listening to NPR while I cook, etc, etc). I've taken to putting it in a dock in the kitchen while I'm not using it on a trip or in the evening. It's a great 'appliance' in my kitchen. And the battery life is nothing short of amazing. I got stuck in Denver last week on a business trip due to weather. My chargers were in my check in luggage. I was in Denver (enroute to DC) for 24 hours, the iPad lasted through three 2-hour movies, two 2hr TV shows, tons and tons of emails and even a couple hours of editing business documents. I estimate a solid 12 hours of actual use one charge.. and it still had 20% charge left. But why Good and not Excellent. The hard ware is there, it's excellent for travel and home use, maybe even business. It could replace my laptop. But the software isn't "there" yet. The OS NEEDS multitasking and a few other tweaks and features to make it useful for business travel or even just to make it a good family kitchen appliance. It needs this and some other things to make it 'there'. And the iPad-specific apps are seriously lacking to date. Yes, you can use iPhone apps. but why? they are small and built for that tiny screen. They feel pretty useless on an iPad. Yet, there are SO many apps that COULD be done on the iPad that don't exist yet, or are on the iPhone but would be much much better on the iPad.. and they aren't there yet. For example, there are some decent recipe apps, but all just not really 'there'. They have keynote and pages, but they aren't 'there' yet either. So much potential.. and not quite there. The good news is that the OS is supposed to upgrade this fall, and the apps are coming and getting better. My advice is GET AN iPad.. you'll find it's much much more useful than you ever thought, and will be finding uses you didn't know you had. BUT.. wait till fall when the software (OS and apps) catches up to the hardware's potential.Read full review
I have to say that God who sent his only son down to save me is great for having this iPad made. Because I have accepted his only son who is Jesus Christ to save me, I get to listen to 2723 songs on this device until I am old and have passed on everything to my love ones. My parents gave me the best through their siblings, and I must do the same for my future generations. It is amazing that 32GB can fit more than 2000 songs. These songs were imported from 218 or so CDs from my family heirloom. I have only had this for about 2 years, however, it has been used as a music player... There is so much you can do with this first generation iPad, but I would recommend it as a music player for grown kids. Thank you for reading my review. [I ask to be perfect for the remainder of my existences.]Read full review
I mostly really like it. It is a bit heavy to use as an e-reader all the time but do like the backlighting for night viewing in the dark. A bit hard to view in the direct sunlight. Needs strong WiFi source to get quick downloads so that is a potential drawback even in the house vs the 3G model like the iPhone. As a result I'm looking for a WiFi repeater to get better signal into parts of the house further away from source. I like the larger screen compares with smaller 7 inch readers and tablets coming out - makes it much easier to read and manipulate. My wife loves using it so I may need to buy her one ! Price is a bit of a down side but if you are going to use it as a mini computer then it costs less than an AirBook e.g. I might rate it higher if I can get hold of a good repeater to send signal into other parts of house. However, beside that problem I really enjoy using it. I found a nice inexpensive leather case on eBay which protects it and is a good addition to get. I would buy the iPad again but might consider an AirBook instead for a second one.Read full review
This purchase was based on providing me entertainment on the flights I am doing internationally. The Ipad has a lot of nice features to occupy anyone for hours with music, video and web searches (except Adobe flash base). The weight isn't noticable for the first few hours but dows seem to get heavier as the hours pass. The screen is really crisp and easy to look at, even at the brightest levels. Wifi works well, when you can find a source. I wouldn't recommend this as a laptop replacement but more as a portable entertainment device. If the data plans were cheaper and I didn't already have data on my cellphone, I would have gone with the 32g with 3G.
It is nice to take on trips for entertainment that can be passed from person to person in the car as they compete in games. I like that I can download several movies from itunes without having to have several cd's to keep up with. I like that I can download photos from my camera on it to make the quality of the pictures is good before I leave the place where I took the photos (when shooting people this is VERY nice and I can check the focus quality before I get home). The battery life I'm not overly pleased with and it does not charge very quick. I often get a message that says it is not charging when I plug it in. I have unplugged everything and plugged it back in but still nothing. I have found that if I just leave it plugged in it is charging even when it says it's not...this is strange. I can slip it into my purses and not have to carry around more than just my purse when I'm not using it. The pictures quality is very good, the size for movies on the go is very good, and volume quality is good. It gets a bit heavy after you hold it for a short while, I would like for it to have been a little lighter in weight. The price it high I bought mine used....I can't imagine playing full price for it!!!Read full review
This is a good product to have for Apple fans that want to begin elementary aged children on a "tablet" - Many downloadable games and school on-line extra curricular (such as reading eggs or Overdrive used by many library systems) is not downloadable because it requires a program higher than iOS 5.1 - the 1st generation does not go past the highest 5 version. However, there are plenty still of programs available for this version that elementary children can still utilize that are just as good (and are free for downloading). All other functions work well also (surfing, music, movies). For me, this version has timed out a few times (screen turns black and it reboots itself to the last item before freezing). I am not sure why it does that. Overall it is a good starter for kids for the price.Read full review
I love the ipad and got it at a great price on ebay. Mine is the 32 GB WIFI, if I were to do it over, I would get one with 3G, because I am not able to access WIFE in all areas where I live. But the product is wonderful and I just have to do some planning when traveling with it to be sure I have everything downloaded that I might need so I am not stranded without acess to information. I especially love the kindle application. The bigger screen and color is a big advantage over my kindle device. This is not a replacement for your computer or phone but it is a wonderful entertainment and educational tool that will fit in your purse and keep information at your finger tips on the go. I only give a 4 star because I didn't get on that had both wifi and 3G--Live and learn!I just got my daughter one that has both 3 G and wifi as she starts her doctoral program.Read full review
The first computer in my life was a DEC PDP-4. My first home computer was a Kaypro Model 4 with 64kB of RAM and--ready for this?--two, double-sided, double-density floppy drives with 320 kB each. Also a J-Cat 300 baud (bps) modem to access all the bulletin boards and chat rooms. I bought the iPad for my 14-year-old daughter, who's computer-savvy, has some mild learning disabilities, and wouldn't be caught dead using a clunky laptop in class. She does use the iPad, which all her high school buds think is massively cool; she never puts it away from the time we start driving to school to the time we drive home. The iPad has made a substantial, positive, difference in her high school experience. It keeps track of assignments, does multi-media presentations, allows for note taking, even has a piano keyboard that she uses to learn pieces for her music class. Please note: at the same college-prep school, only iPads are cool. The few unfortunates who've showed up with some Android unit are, at best, given sympathy for the lameness of their parents. Also note: I have never cared for portable computers. I never carried my "luggable" Kaypro, I have only a few times carried any laptop supplied by an employer. I hate the weird keyboard layouts and the, usually, atrocious feel of the keys. I loathe touchpads. I'm a senior citizen, and I use two 24-inch LCDs on my desktop, so a laptop's screen is just too small. The last advance in user interfaces, in my opinion, was Apple's Lisa (which was re-designed and re-introduced as the Macintosh). I still like using a command line, and I still remember all the DOS commands. But...the iPad's user interface is, in my opinion, an astonishingly large improvement on every other interface to date, including Android. The iPad box does not include a printed manual, and it doesn't need one. I used my daughter's iPad for a few hours before I wrapped it for Christmas, and I found my way to everything the iPad had to offer, including all the "gestures" that make using the touchscreen simultaneously so rich in possibilities and so easy to control. As a man who hasn't bought an Apple product in more than 15 years (except for my employees' use in graphic arts), my assessment of the iPad is that the rave reviews are too restrained. My daughter's iPad is, I believe, a better portable for most uses than any laptop. The next few generations of the iPad could result in an extraordinarily powerful computational device that improves on the best user interface ever, a device that replaces both laptop and desktop for almost all computer users. Whether or not this proves true, I will be buying an iPad soon.Read full review
