It doesn't matter whether you believe the hype about this device or not. After having purchased one because I was curious, (fully intending to re-sell it immediately) I slowly began finding myself using it more and more often. I can't part with it now, even though I really can't afford to keep it. It is an integral part of my family. Here's why: 1) My work is all on the web. I like to check in on that stuff - but I don't have to boot up a computer to do it. I mess with Facebook some, I look up sports highlights (ESPN app is great with video tidbits too) and news. All of this I can do with a thin little screen which always seems to have battery life no matter how long it's been since I last charged it. 2) Apps. Let me say this now - physical magazines and newspapers are dead in 10 years. You install the app for your latest magazine and it's on your iPad - open within a few seconds and be looking at the latest USA today or Wall Street Journal.. take it with you on the plane or train just like the paper. Read a book, have a library with you.. big screen with changeable font sizes for people with bad or tired eyes. Watch a movie (or 3 before your next charge). 3) Learning tool. Not only for adults, my kids won't stop asking for the thing. It makes sense, a 2 year-old can pick up the iPad and by using his own intuition (touching, tapping, pressing the single button) he has it figured out all on his own. I gave in and bought a couple games and learning apps for toddlers and the kid is drawing pictures and e-mailing them to his Nana. Let me say this also- there is no single piece of technology that is more interactive and interesting to a small child. Directed appropriately, I think this is a major breakthrough for child learning. Think about it.. what's the toughest thing kids have to learn about starting on a computer? It's the mouse and the keyboard. Those days are over. Ok, so it's a glowing review- but I think with this unit you are peering into the future here. There is a time and place for sitting in front of a big screen and hammering out some text (like right now for me), but I see this as the next major movement in personal technology. It doesn't replace your computer, but it will make you use it a lot less than you do now.Read full review
It feels right to hold the internet in your hand. It looks right to not have a mouse on your screen and just tap a new link with your finger. • It's awesome to use the iPad like a Wacom tablet for your Mac or PC. It even has the potential to be a wireless extended display or secondary display for your computer. • The onscreen keyboard looks great. • Many people complain that the iPad (and iPhone/iPod Touch) can't do Adobe Flash and that its a deal breaker. Flash is CPU hog and is very poorly implemented - it's an "in" for viruses and is a way for advertisers to sneak annoying ads on you. The iPad (and iPhone OS 4.0) are essentially forcing webmasters to move to more standards compliant HTML5 video and animation - a good thing! • The iPad opens us up to iBooks (an eReader app/implementation) - amazing - way better than the Kindle - even though you can also have the Kindle experience on your iPad too! • The 3Gs has a 600Mhz processor and seems snappy compared to the 3G or 1G - but the 1Ghz CPU in the iPad is lightening fast - everything is perfectly smooth! • In my first week of ownership I've noticed battery life is nothing short of awesome - 10 hours one time, 11 another. • The iPad also supports hardware keyboards (dockable and bluetooth) • Because an iPad uses standard iPod sync & charge cables, accessories are easy to find. The iPad makes a great first, second, or even third computer. It will become my main internet device and "eBaying" device ... I used it to type this review. If you're not an early adopter of the iPad I'd wait to get the 3G version. You don't have to activate it, but it'll be nice if you ever wish to. But don't forget that you can activate the iPad Wifi on ANY cellular carrier by getting a contract with ANY cell carrier and getting a 3G to Wifi Router such as the MiFi or Cradlepoint router!Read full review
eh, it's an ipad. nice i suppose if you are a trendy person. does everything a laptop does but is much thinner and more portable. processing power is more than you'd get out of a typical netbook so thats a plus. downside is that it's only going to run a modified version of the iphone OS. so, no windows dual booting, and no linux. touch screen is nice, using gestures and on screen keyboard to navigate your way through your files n such. just make sure you have a microfiber cloth to clean your oily (natural oils in everyone's hands) fingertips off the screen. the unlocked 3G is a big bonus, as i plan on using this abroad... mainly in south africa but also europe. previous versions have been locked to the US only making it impossible to get a 3g connection anywhere else. but this one gets it so that's nice. ultimately, this product new or used, is terribly overpriced for the computing power you're getting out of it. im looking forward to other companies making their own versions of this, and improving upon this model. perhaps even allowing us to change the OS to something more preferable.Read full review
The IPAD is great! The size of a piece of paper, just a little thicker, I have all my favorite music, videos, pictures, and books. I am able to take notes and prepare powerpoint presentations. I can go online and check email or do all the normal online stuff that one would do with a computer. For serious writing you do need the optional keyboard. For office work it will not replace a desktop computer but for most away from office activities it is ideal. Hopefully the price will come down, but even it it doesn't it is worth the price to me. If you shop around you can often find small discounts, and often you can find new and used IPAD for sale. I love my IPAD and those that I know that have one loves theirs as well.
pros: Good design and quality, and the software is sleek, fast, supersmooth and stable.(And as usual for ios, the software is thought through) Batterylife is very good, easly matches the claimed 10hrs with constant usage. The display is very good also, better than the 3gs. Ios for ipad offers a lot of nice features vs the iphone. Cons: As with other ios devices you are stuck at using Itunes for syncing/adding content. And as usual the video supportlist is extremely small, so you are usually forced to convert files. Ios for ipad obviously doesn't have the same upadaterate as the iPhone. Ios for ipad is still at 3.x, update to 4.x will come later in spring, almost a half year later than the iphone. No usb input or memorycard reader No camera And why no sms and call app on the 3g version? Conclusion The few letdowns there are doesn't really do much, cause the good things on this thing are ...Really good. All in all this is a great device. Not really a musthave thing, but if you like gadgets you'll love thisone.Read full review
This is the most utility device i have ever bought. But let me warn you, if you are looking for some feature that you cannot do on a laptop then this is not the device for you. You can do your daily and regular tasks faster and better. The mail is the single most important feature. The way you can read mail and how quickly you can check your mail is amazing. We have an app for virtually everything. We have an app to check out bank balance, we have an app to buy an item in bay, we have an app to check news, etc. Believe me, you have to use the device to know it's potential. I use ipad's Iannotate app a lot to annotate PDF documents. I also use goodreader app for reading and then I most recently had a training session from my friend. He shared his desktop using webex and I attended his meeting and was able to view his computer's desktop through the Webex app. The colors are loud and crisp. They are pleasing to the eye. I was worried initially that the backlighting might cause eye strain. But I have been using iPad extensively and I have noticed no strain in my eye. True, that it is just an iPod touch with a good screen real estate. But it makes me wonder in awe, what we can do with just that extra space. For everything that made using iPhone or iPod make you want to have a bigger screen, iPad is the answer. It is the best reading experience when it comes to reading news. There are also some utility apps which are educational like the mind maps. I use them extensively to organize my notes. Then there are math puzzles to exercise your brain. The best thing about all the apps is that 99.99% of the apps are within the affordable range of 0.99,1.99,2.99 and 9.99. Most of the useful apps are below the $2.99. When it comes to cons, the most important feature that I regret is the lack of a camera. It prevents me from making a video call. Another feature missing is the extendible memory. It also does not have a USB port. Getting books and videos onto iPad is a pain using iTunes. The mail app lacks the ability to add attachments. It is quite strange since I find myself in a usual situation where I want to clarify my work related issue with the help of a screenshot or document that I have in my goodreader app. It is true that i can go to my goodreader app and then use the email as attachment feature to send the document as attachment. Many of the apps do this. However when I want to add an attachment as part of an email chain communication chain, it is possible only by replying and then adding attachments which is not possible in the mail app instead of having to start a separate mail thread just for a simple attachment. I also miss flash support. It is impossible to view online streaming for sports such as cricket and football. We rely an an app instead of using a lot of free streamingTyping on the ipads keyboard is fun. But it could be better if we had arrow keys and control keys to navigate text. But it must be said here that the keyboard is very very smart. It prompts you with the right word at the right place and the best part is you just have type a space and it automatically takes it. However if the prompt is not the correct word then we cannot change it to a word that we want from the keyboard. We have to either correct it by backspacing or click the cross("x") on the prompt. This is not a huge deal though. That's it, overall, I would recommend the iPad to everyone and I don't regret spending $829 for the device. It is money well speRead full review
we don't own a cell phone. i know, i know. the thing is, there's no actual cell service that works at our house; so, we have to have a land line. anyway, we are planning a trip to see some friends in switzerland this coming summer, aand we wanted to have something to take instead of the weighty macbook pro. since the ipad arrived, i have been having a blast with it. i thought initially that the small screen size would be annoying for me, since my vision isn't great. it's not! no problem at all! it's taken a bit of time to learn to navigate, since this new creature is more like a phone than a real computer, i guess. it's very easy to use and i think it will be just the thing for travel.
IPAD, new fenomena from APPLE. Will Ipad replace my Iphone/Ipod Touch/Blackberry? - No. Its a bigger screen Ipod Touch/ Iphone therefore its too big for your pocket Will Ipad replace my Netbook/ Notebook/ Desktop PC/ Macbook? - No. Function wise is to limited to replace serious PC/Macbook. It is just in fact a bigger screen version of Ipod Touch/ Iphone using same base of OS (iphone OS instead of Mac OSX) So Why do I buy this IPAD: 1. Its a cool device from Apple 2. Closest replacement for Magazine/newspaper/tabloid/family album and any other reading and viewing material where you may use it while lying down in the bed before sleeping or it may become your best friend in the restroom/toilet he3x. 3. Faster loading time compare to regular PC/Mac so its just like PDA, almost as instant as opening a newspaper. 4. Lighter than most slate pc / tablet pc. (Close enough to a thick magazine such Fortune/forbes/vogue/cosmopolitan etc) 5. Wider screen compare to other PDA/ media player / Smart Phone. 6. Excellent multi touch screen ability to navigate your reading. 7. Interaction bonuses as its a wifi/internet reading material. 8. It can even manage your email/ ebay bidding and other daily online activity. 9. Enough PC/Mac capability for instant document editing/ auditing/ viewing. So IPAD its not to replace any of your current gadget, but simply to fulfill additional gadget that you wishing for. For me, I always looking a way to replace an conventional reading material such as magazine/newspaper/brochures etc., which content wise can be replace from the site you search from the internet, problem is we cannot hold and operate netbook/desktop/macbook lying down in the bed, even some slate PC its just still to heavy to hold and difficult operate with one hand, stylus style its even worst. So I put my bet that Ipad may do the job for me.Read full review
At this point we've run the full spectrum on iPad opinion. It should be clear that there are aspects of this device which we love, and others which we clearly do not. In summarizing our feelings about the iPad, we're forced to take two paths -- one which analyzes the device's position in relation to the advancement of the personal computer, and one which clearly speaks to whether or not we think you should spend your money on this thing. Path one: the iPad as a computing revolution. Does the iPad evolve the personal computer in a significant way? Yeah, actually, it kind of does. Despite what you think right now, and despite the limitations Apple has put on some aspects of this device, what it says to the market is significant. The iPad is powerful, elegant, and largely unlike any computer you've ever used. You know how first generation games for a console look kind of dated when you put them against titles released after years of honing? Imagine what will be happening with something like the iPad in a year or two. This stuff is legitimately important. It's not magical, but it's a little bit revolutionary, and you have to at least give Apple that. They've pulled off a cohesive touch computing platform with very few rough edges -- and that's no small feat. Path two: should you buy into the revolution today? The first thing that must be said -- although we've already stated it -- is that we don't think the iPad is a laptop replacement. Not yet. What that means is that if you need a laptop to work in something like Excel, Word, or countless other PC or Mac applications, you shouldn't expect the iPad to take its place. But, if you're like a lot of computer users, you don't really do much on your system except for listen to music, casually browse the web and read news sites, watch some online video, play games, and keep in touch with friends via Twitter, IM, and Facebook. If you fit that description, you might just fall in love with Apple's $499 bundle of joy -- because it does the majority of those things much better than its laptop counterparts (granted, one at a time, and, er... not online video). So the verdict? The buyer of an iPad is one of two people, the first is someone who sees not just the present, but the potential of a product like the iPad... and believes in and is excited about that potential. This is also a person who can afford what amounts to a luxury item. The second is an individual who simply doesn't need to get that much work done, and would prefer their computing experience to be easier, faster, and simpler. Does that sound like anyone you know? Note: Apple informed us that some of the software on our test unit was early, so there could be changes when everything goes live today. If we see any alterations of note, we'll be sure to update the review.Read full review
There are three standard of evaluating Ipads. Amount of memory; capability to pick up WIFI; and the capability to use 3G. This Ipad has the highest memory,it has WIFI and 3G. This particular IPAD had over 250 days of warranty left. It included a cover and a Bluetooth Keypad. At the present time, the IPAD is the best of the type of electronic device available. The number of applications available are impressive. This was a good choice and I won the auction at a very good price.
