There are hundreds of books written about The Beatles, but there are only two really essentials: 1. Mark Lewisohn's Beatles Chronicles (you may choose between: "Complete Beatles Chronicle : The Only Definitive Guide to the Beatles' Entire Career" (for a very detailed info) or "The Complete Beatles Chronicle" (for a shorter detailed info), and 2. MacDonald's "Revolution in the Head". The 1st one is a day by day chronicle about The Beatles did, the 2nd one an exhaustive analysis of what they meant with detailed comments about each Beatles song by a classical music critic. You may disregard any of his opinions or that any song was not covered enough, but it's a very rich analysis you'll enjoy instead of being reading anecdotal histories as most of the books about then does.
I read the first edition. This is a good update.
