Sandra Cisneros was born in Chicago in 1954. Internationally acclaimed for her poetry and fiction, which has been translated into more than twenty languages, she has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Lannan Literary Award, the American Book Award, and the Thomas Wolfe Prize, and of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the MacArthur Foundation. Cisneros is the author of two novels, The House on Mango Street and Caramelo; a collection of short stories, Woman Hollering Creek; two books of poetry, My Wicked Wicked Ways and Loose Woman; a children's book, Hairs/Pelitos; a selected anthology of her own work, Vintage Cisneros; Have You Seen Marie?, a fable for adults illustrated by Ester Hernandez; and the -jigsaw autobiography- A House of My Own. Great book for a bored mind
Written by Sandra Cisneros, The House on Mango Street is an excellent book for anyone who wants another reading materiel before their favorite book's next volume. The House on Mango Street is about a year in the life of a girl named Esperanza who is a Chicana or Mexican-American she is about twelve years old when the novel begins. During the story, she and her family moves into a house on Mango Street. The house is a big improvement from the family’s previous home, which is an apartment, and it is the first home her parents actually own. However, the house is not what Esperanza has dreamed of, due it is run-down and small state. The house is in the center of a crowded Latino neighborhood in Chicago, a city where many of the poor areas are racially segregated. Esperanza does not have any privacy from her family or the outside world, and she concludes that she will someday leave Mango Street and have a dream house all her own. I personally believe that the book is excellent and has a few dark turn here and there. I would recommend anyone who like to read about Mexican American lifeRead full review

Don't miss this sweet, unforgettable book!
The House on Mango Street is one of those books you never forget reading. It is a sweet, sweet wisp of a book. The story is about Esperanza, a girl growing up in the United States in the very poor inner-city. Although some of Esperanza's difficulties are encountered only by those growing up Hispanic, almost all situations can be felt deeply by all who read it. The book is stunningly told with its quirky language and sentiment (in fact, some stories are semi-autobiographical for Cisneros). In addition, it is told in small vignettes, and Esperanza's age jumps around throughout the book. All can relate to the school situations as well as the heartbreaking family ones, and the trials and tribulations of being an awkward teenager is a major theme of the book. Who can't relate to that? A book for all, but most appreciated by girls, I think. It can be understood on many levels, so could be read up through grades eleven or twelve. Also loved by adults, it will stop your heart.Read full review

Pretty good book. Enjoyable.
I bought this book for a school assignment and had to take extensive notes on it. To be hinest, I never would have read this book if I didn't have to, but it turned out to be a pretty good story. The book is a quick read and told from a 12 year old's POV (Point of View). I enjoyed this book, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to read. It has 110 pages, some words are misspelled, and the chapters are short (like about one full page), but again, it is told be a 12 year old.

Great book for hispanics learning English...
Sandra Cisneros really captures the essence of the inmigrant into the states. It's a compilation of short stories that once read, they stay with you forever. Written through a little girl's point of view, you can't help to feel connected with what she's narrating. Whether it brings back memories of your own experience or simply make you feel related, her stories are an uplifting way of looking at where you currently are compared to the first days of personal inmigration. I use this books with my adult students and they love it, they feel the learning experience. Definetely a keeper in your library collection. Mando Dallas, TX
