About this product

Product Information

Pier Paolo Pasolini was a celebrated poet, writer, and all-around intellectual, but it was his maverick, controversial filmmaking that distinguished him as an influential artistic force. The director's last film, 120 DAYS OF SODOM, an adaptation of the Marquis de Sade's 18th century novel, remains his most notorious (and most censored) due to its scenes of graphic rape and torture of adolescents. Pasolini relocates the novel's horrific abuses from France to the final days of Mussolini's reign, effectively rendering a grim portrait of the degradation of the human body and spirit beneath Fascist and Nazi rule.

Lives up to the hype! This is sick.

So my friend and I are on a mission to see the most disturbing films ever made and this ... unlike most, is not like watching violent porn, this movie is absolutely disturbing. It is basically satanic rituals and the systematic destruction and humiliation of humans beings by their captors. It portrays an un-caring view of human life, embraces perversion, and attempts to break every taboo one could think of. You basically get what you sign up for, I would throw this up there with the top 3 most disturbing films I have ever seen. I don't want to spoiler anything but the film is completely repulsive, unsettling, and flat out nasty. I loved it, won't ever watch it again, but if you want to watch something twisted, this should be on the top of the list. And its actually a quite well made film, just be aware the film makers did not know what a tripod was and its kinda shaky, not bad, but think hand-held with a steady hand. NOT recommended for most, but if you are really into film and want to watch something that gets a reaction out of you, this is about the most sickening thing I have ever seen.

  • Top critical review

Up to Criterion collection standards, but the movie... that's a different story.

This DVD, on a technical level, certainly stands up to Criterian Collection standards. There's a nice and informative booklet and the transfer is top notch. But that aside, the movie itself is a bit hard to swallow. Pasolini is indeed one of the greats of Italian cinema, but I found it hard to sit thru the movie and have only watched it once. And I'd like to think that I've seen some pretty intense movies. I'll probably sell my copy when I get a chance and pass along the nightmares to someone else!

  • Salo

The movie isn’t so much entertaining as it is just an allegory and observation on fascism in old Italy, only for Indie/Art House Nerds like myself.

  • Not for the average movie watcher

If you know anything about pasolini you know he made film that would shock you so you would pay attention. Behind the harsh visuals and content there is a very interesting and heavy undertones of political and societal injustice along with human psychology based around power and control. It's a very amazing movie if you are into artistic deep meaningful movies not looking for box office blockbusters like avengers. If you can find the criterion Blu Ray it's the way to go. Has an amazing transfer and great extras along with the English dub . So far this is the only source for 1080p in the US

  • "A great date movie" -Bill Hader

Salo is a great adventure for the whole family! Though there is some immature potty humor thrown in there (for the kids), it's still a joy to watch for those of all ages.
