Courageous and well written book by Stockett. The injustice suffered by black women (seen as inferior by their so-called superior white families) was shocking. This occurred in the 1960s at the time of Kennedy's and Martin Luther King's assassination. A true story. The white families still thought of the black women as slaves to be treated contemptuously. These black women brought up the children of the whites - to the neglect of their own children. I bought the book because I've just seen the film also entitled 'The Help. When the black women find courage to unload the indignities suffered by them to Miss Skeeter(their champion)for her book of that name,I felt like standing up and cheering! Its to be hoped the book helps further improve the lot of Americas black citizens. I liked everything about the book and its one I will read many times. Impressive!Read full review
Two words… ‘Loved it!’ The Help is absolutely a must read book, as I was torn between not being able to put the book down and not wanting it to ever end. Especially as I am usually a slow reader, yet I managed to finish the book in 4 days. The bravery of these smart and determined women is inspiring. Kudos to Kathryn Stockett on her first novel, I look forward to reading more from this author. Highly recommended to all, you will not be disappointed.
